Personally I’d be very hesitant to get a rescue, especially for a special needs kid. Seems like a crapshoot. I have a relative who has had multiple rescues, and while some have been ok, more than one have been completely insane. She used to have to drive to a laundromat every day to give the dog it’s meds, because the dog wouldn’t take them at home.
Is money an object? If not check out a LagottoRomagnolo. Italian water dog. They only get to 35lbs. Smart, very friendly with kids...and no shedding.
Make sure it’s a reputable breeder. Ours even did temperament testing on the puppy’s. They are energetic.
This is where ours came from... LINK /
Btw..wife’s idea, not mine..but guess who cares for him.

I have a black lab/pit bull mix
How is it's temperament? We have a brindle pit/lab and it's by far on the smartest dogs I have ever encountered. Surprisingly ours is not terribly athletic, but extremely sensitive and well-behaved. Not very emotionally intelligent but she really understands tasks well. Very rarely barks and does well when we leave, never tears anything up.
Just asking to get a gauge if this is the temperament of most pit/lab mixes, because when she dies (likely 4-6 more years), we have enjoyed her so much and may look into finding another. She was found, though, so not sure how prevalent the breed is.

There are plenty of unregistered pure bred dogs out there. I think labs are the best dogs ever for children!

Anyone have good breeder recommendations for golden retrievers?

Pyredoddle. Great Pyrenese/poodle mix. Best family dog ever. Somewhat nocturnal, He will patrol house at night spending time in every room. Large dog but very smart and easily trained. I never heard of this mix before we got one. Look them up, might be what you need.

The shedding/grooming issue is a big one. Long haired, double coated breeds are a grooming nightmare. Keep that in mind.

Standard poodle. Smart, athletic and don’t shed.
Very friendly and great dispositionh

Labs may be a little too rambunctious and destructive for a young kid. Goldens are destructive too when young, but they seem to grow out of it sooner and become real chill mellow adult dogs

If you want a companion for yourself, get a lab.
If you want a teddy bear to grow up with your child, you pick this little fella....
Basset Hounds are the sweetest life mate for any young person, they can grow up with them and use them as a pillow as they age. Always comforting and when you come home they always look like they had a worse day than you.

Some of the best dogs I have had were stray/mixed breeds. Many good dogs waiting in shelters to be rescued.

Chocolate lab all day long. Sister has a golden and the dog sheds like hell.

We have a 4 month old choco lab right now. Just remember that 1st puppy year is tough.

We have a Sheepadoodle. Old English Sheep Dog and Standard Poodle. Best dog we’ve ever had. Doesn’t shed. Does not smell. Loves, and I mean loves our kids. Loves to play, snuggle and take naps. Sleeps in youngest kids bed.
Has a huge sounding bark and barks at knock on door or someone in the yard. Truth is, I don’t think he’d hurt a fly. But I wonder if someone was truly messing with us, if he’d get involved.
The best part is the herding. If one of the kids gets too close to the street or any other perceived danger, the sheepadoodle will push them back towards safety.

Thats aka "Big Love" in the pic. We have 3 golden retreivers and I wouldn't trade them or their hair for anything. 100 % love and perfect for your family

The only negative is the grooming. You have to be willing to brush them out a couple times of week. Or be willing to pay a groomer $100 everY three weeks or so. We have a mobile groomer that comes to us.
