What exactly is covered in a car tune-up? It seems like an excellent way to rip someone off. Do any of you get tune-ups regularly?

I usually tune down. The factory settings are always too high

Not sure but I think a tune-up nowadays mainly consists of changing the spark plugs. I get air filters and other things checked & changed during my routine oil changes.

Spark plugs, plug wires or coil packs is generally what I regard as a tune up

Not sure, but the valet at the Indigo is good at testing it out after the tune up

Depends on the place and mileage.

At my house, it's usually:

All fluids except tranny and coolant
Clean air filter, MAF sensor, and throttle body
Plugs and wires
Grease all joints
Check everything else out like brakes and bearings

If you are talking about recent cars, a tune up is an oil change and rotate the tires. Replace the air filter every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

These engines will run past 100,000 miles with just that.

After 100,000 miles it will depend on your vehicle. If you own a GM product prepare for many pricey failures
