Long story short. We found a mini dachshund while on a Saturday drive, took it to an animal shelter to see if it had a chip, and wound up with the dog. The dog had a chip, but the previous owner was elderly and the dog got away from them and they had to leave them. Said if we could give a home they would rather that happen.
The dog was unwell, but active, and we got it to the vet and found out it had heartworms. Started it on treatment. Doxycycline and Proheart 6.
We had it two weeks yesterday and it took a turn for the worst. Took to emergency vet and found out it had Caval syndrome, was anemic, in right side heart failure, and most likely renal failure. We had to put it down.
We had all, present dogs included, just got attached to her and boom.
So just buy your dogs their preventative and give it to them. Dont put your pets through that.

I am sorry for your loss.
The least expensive place to buy heart-worm and flea and tick medicine, even without an a prescription is from pet-i-supply dot com. On average you will save about 30 to 40 percent versus buying locally or online from the USA.
I’ve been a customer for almost 10 years. Plan accordingly, as it does take about 3 weeks to receive your order.

Sorry to hear. Just take comfort in that you did the right thing and took the pup in and showed it love. And yes, you are right. In our climate, it is necessary to provide heartworm preventative to your pups & dogs.

I made the mistake with my first dog. Never bothered with heart worm meds, then he got it. After a $1300 treatment, all future dogs get a shot every 6 months.

A lot of people think their indoor pets don’t need heart worm medication, but all it takes is a single infected mosquito getting in the house or bitting them while they’re on a walk.

I’m so very sorry. Thank you for taking the dog into your family. See this all of the time. And even if you’d been at a place (or rather the dog) to have the emergency surgery for CS, I don’t how good it does in the end bc of heart damage already from hw. I’ve seen several rescues do it, but have never seen the long term outcome.

We had to deal with this with a stray we found. Heartworm pills apparently kill immature heartworms that dogs may have been infected with in the previous 30 days. They do not protect for the upcoming 30 days.
The heartworm pills will also kill established heartworms pretty quickly. But they basically fragment and then cause blockages and major issues which likely kill the dog.
You have to make sure that the dog does not have heartworms before beginning their heartworm meds.

It's actually a bit longer. One of ours was missing and we got him back and we were in the clear.

Most somewhat sophisticated people in the south know to give their dogs heart worm medication. Maybe a barnyard dog in rural Mississippi or a city dump dog get nothing. Yes, it is likely an eventual death sentence for a dog that is not treated.
