Put your kid in James Madison instead of GMU. Better all around

Kid is going to business school. The value of the business degree is in the co-ops or internships you have while in school. George Mason is right in Washington DC with access to just about any major corporation in the US. Also, the diversity was a big selling point for us. The university is only 50% white.

It might interest you that GMU has one of the most free-market/Austrian friendly economic departments of any school in the country.

I did not know this. I was a big von Mises fan while at Auburn. This makes me feel better about that school then.

I wouldn't pay out of state tuition to send a kid to GMU. UVA, W&M and VT are the only state schools worth paying out of state tuition. If you're kid is a Melvin and doesn't want the traditional college party scene GMU will be perfect for him. I grew up in the area and the kids at Robinson High School threw way better parties and than the dweebs at GMU.

commuter safety school in northern va. suburban environment. definitely not worth oos tuition and cost of living. only go if offered huge scholarships and your kid wants to stay in the dc area afterward.

Kid's criteria:

1. Good business school
2. Large city, but not too cold
3. Access to a number of large corporations for internships
4. Very diverse student population

With this criteria, George Mason is one of the few that fits. UAB would also make that list, but they don't want to be THAT close to home. The Georgia schools are out because you have to basically be Einstein to get in them from out of state. Miami would also be a possibility.

My law degree is from GMU, but I didn't do undergrad there. The Virginia state system is very good.

My son went to Washington & Lee. Have you considered there? It's not in the state system, but a very good school.

George Mason law school is in Arlington near the Virginia Square Metro stop.

A. OP clearly wasn't talking about GM Law School.

B. Arlington still isn't in DC.

It's in Fairfax. I don't think it's that far out. There's a stop on the metro for it.

Would she be staying in Virginia or DC? DC is very expensive.

Yes, but so is Fairfax/Arlington. The days of cheap rent in the 'burbs are pretty much gone around here. To get a significantly cheaper place would require going pretty far out of the city or living in some of the seedier places closer in. Commute times from the extended outer suburbs can be a royal pain, and anything close to a metro station will be expensive even if it's pretty far out.

GMU main campus does not have a metro stop. It's real far outside of the beltway.

My daughter is getting her masters from GMU (graduates in May).

She has had a good experience there and we live in NOVA so it has allowed her to live at home and save money.

Winters here are hit or miss. We get a shitload of snow (think 2' at a time) or we have a winter like this year that has been mild with only a couple of dustings.

It's a solid school. It started out as a satellite campus of UVA and grew into its' own university.

Been in the area my entire life (29 years old). 100% a commuter school and I don't think DC at all when I think of GMU.

I can assist with an internship in the IT industry.
