I’d call him more of a satirist, which is a subsection of comedy. He also had some damn funny material.

He was a "liberal" in healthy America. Now in our new and improved AmeriKKKa, "liberals" would call him a patriarchal racist sexist homophobic old white man, have protests on his sidewalk, threaten his life and demand that he be erased from the culture.

I could deal with his liberalism, really kinda closer to anarchism if I had to guess though.
It’s his Bill Maher-esque atheism that is grating to me.
