How do you breath in there? Is the little vent on top, the only source of air? What if that gets covered by debris?

Vent has very small holes and it comes with a fan you install on the roof of the shelter.

Yes D batteries.
I keep over a dozen extra batteries in a small plastic bin I keep down there. Fan has a light on it too.

The schools my kids go to have shelter 'rooms' that each grade goes to in the event of a tornado. I think that's what you were asking maybe.

CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI
* EFFECTIVE THIS TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 1245 PM UNTIL
900 PM CDT.
* PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE...
SEVERAL TORNADOES LIKELY WITH A COUPLE INTENSE TORNADOES
POSSIBLE
WIDESPREAD LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED VERY LARGE HAIL EVENTS TO 2.5
