Glad you figured it out

No kidding. That flag told him to kill like the dog told Son of Sam.

Seems to me it would be a lot more productive if we studied our abhorrent present instead of worrying about a flag from our past.

Do you not think he embraced that flag as a symbol of white supremacy? I'd say that fact is a near certainty.
So in Roofs mind the confederate flag represented white supremacy and black oppression and he is proud to pose with it for that reason.
Then, to me, it follows that when he sees the flag flying proudly at the statehouse he believes (in his mentally fragile and unstable mind) that his racist views are somewhat acceptable. He thinks others believe the same but are to cowardly to act on those racist beliefs. He doesn't view his love of confederacy and bigoted hatred as abhorrent. In my opinion, that's why it's connected. I don't think it's much of a reach. Symbols matter.

That's going to do it. That's going to solve all our of racist issues.
Congrats, everyone...we did it!

You keep saying that.
Symbols have as much meaning, or matter as much, as we allow them to.

Then why are symbols and organizations used to promote black supremacy allowed and often celebrated? Why can't whites be proud of being white or anything associated with being white?

Jesus Christ people are dumb.
OH NO! A REBEL FLAG! I HAS THE FEELS!
I see shite everyday that offends me (just watch 10 minutes of rap videos). People just need to grow a set of balls and move on with their lives.
Yeah, the kid was a piece of shite and hid behind the confederate flag.
I swear this is like renaming french fries into freedom fries.
Seeing a flag shouldn't offend anyone. If it does, that's more on you than the flag.

Exactly. Does this offend anybody?
No? Well it should. You should be very offended.

Because only white people are racist duh.. Did you not get the memo sent out by the secret club that only whities can be members of..

Exactly, white people literally can not say or do anything without being bombarded by racism accusations.
Hiring someone for a job? Better be a black person
Voting for an office? Better vote for the black you bigot
Don't like a qb on your favorite sports team that's black? Obviously race related, has nothing to do with their play
Just goes on and on and on in every aspect of life now a days.

Terrorists kill innocents in the name of the Quran and yet we are stripping it from the libraries and shelves in stores. I don't understand the big deal with this, crazy person kills people for crazy reasons and people are over reacting by trying to pin it on a symbol he had. The flag or the gun were not at fault here, it was the lunatic with his crazy thoughts that were at fault.

I see both sides of the argument..
One side its about history and heritage - which I have no issue with..
One side is connecting the flag to slavery, which wasn't what the Civil war was even about, but ok.
Spin off...The Swastika is connected to Hitler & WW2 along with all the terrible things that occurred in that era. If we saw that flag flying it would be beyond frowned upon.. I see a small resemblance to the confederate flag, but no where close...
Honestly, let people have their rights... This is America right?

This is so fricking stupid. If you don't like the flag then don't look at it. America needs to grow a set of balls again.

Maybe it's not a symbol of racism, but I feel I have a good understanding of every backwoods hillbilly I see flying it from the back of their mud-caked pickup.

Those black supremacy symbols were developed to counteract years of the white establishment espousing black inferiority. Black panthers are a direct outgrowth from the open defiance of the civil Rights movement.
You ask this as if you aren't aware whites enslaved Africans in NA for 200 years then deprived them of social, economic and political equality for the next 100.

Couldn't agree more... Next we will be removing the Statue of Liberty because it offends someone. We will never please everyone- are we supposed to? This is about what the people today have made the flag into. Different people have taken different meanings... Isn't that what being in America is about? Freedom to think and say what you want?
The confederate flag is a historic symbol. There is no denying this country wasn't always what it is today, nevertheless, there is an undeniable history that cannot be changed. Rather than insisting on removing icons of history, why not embrace it with the joy that should be felt for what was gained in that war? FREEDOM. A common thread that unites ALL Americans!

I cannot fathom how we transitioned from some psycho killing people to everyone focusing on a flag. I wonder if there is a picture out there of this guy holding an American flag or a Saints flag, would we start banning those also?
What this psycho did was absolutely horrible and he will pay for it. We should be looking at his parents and upbringing to see just where things went wrong to try and prevent this from happening. Instead we are focusing on taking down a piece of fabric!
