In 2019, ‘they’ was recognised by Merriam-Webster as a singular, non-binary pronoun. Now, it’s been named Word of the Decade.
quote:
The American Dialect Society made its decision on Friday, January 3, in New Orleans. As well as ‘they’ being Word of the Decade, the society also selected ‘(my) pronouns’ – such as she/her, he/him or they/them – as its Word of the Year for 2019.

The 2010's. The decade the United States (and the west as a whole) lost their fricking minds.

Using they to describe a single person creates a grammatical paradox...

The party of science can't be bothered with simple stuff like that.

these were all of the nominations
out of that list, I think "meme" should have easily won
quote:
#BlackLivesMatter: expression of protest over police violence against African Americans
climate: used in phrases related to the impact of climate change, including “climate crisis,” “climate emergency,” and “climate strike”
emoji: small icon in electronic communication, used to convey information or emotional attitude, or as a playful substitution for words
meme: a shared cultural item in the form of a phrase, image, or video circulated online, often with humorous, creative alterations
#MeToo: expression of solidarity for women surviving sexual assault or harassment (coined by Tarana Burke)
opioid crisis: epidemic of opioid-related drug overdoses across the U.S.
selfie: a photograph that one takes of oneself, typically with a digital camera and shared on social media
they: gender-neutral singular pronoun for a known person, particularly as a nonbinary identifier (“they,” “them,” themself”)
woke: socially aware, especially about issues of racial and social justice (also used negatively to mock ostensibly enlightened attitudes)
out of that list, I think "meme" should have easily won

If it looks like a guy, I'm calling it "him". If it looks like a girl, it's getting "she".
It all depends on how good of a job they do disguising what they really are.

That should solve all the world's problems.

Using they to describe a single person creates a grammatical paradox...
"John took a bite of the apple as he continued speaking to Sarah. They laughed and took another bite as Sarah grabbed an apple for herself. Then they made a joke about Sarah's mother dying, and they laughed some more. However, Sarah wasn't laughing, but instead was aghast at John's insensitivity."
Who knows WTF I just wrote? But hey, at least I'm woke!

I threw away all modern dictionaries when American Heritage said a man could have a husband.

"Singular they" is creeping into language in many insidious ways beyond anyone asking to be called that.
I keep seeing people write or say shite like "to each their own." Younger people will refer to hypothetical or unknown people as "they" even when the sex of the person is known.
I think it's really ugly.
