I love how people keep saying the jury in Florida was the problem when the damage award was only that high because Denton and Delaurio are unrepentant dicks. If they take the post down or give depositions in which they aren't complete dicks, or testify in court as if they weren't massive dicks, they probably don't get hit with anything. Denton and Delaurio would rather have done it their way and lose then do something smart and mitigate the risk that the company would be destroyed. Now, Denton posts bullshite articles on Gawker about how Thiel is an a-hole, how Gawker is great, and how the judge was biased against them.
What's funny is Gawker is killing Trump over his comments about the judge in his case, while Denton can't stop himself from doing the same thing.

And now that it's been uncovered that Hogan's lawsuit was proded and bankrolled by a closeted right-wing billionaire I don't see why people still defend it.
How, exactly, does Mr. Theil's involvement alter the facts of the case?
Justice was served. It's a shame that it required a billionaire to achieve it though. The money shouldn't matter, but it does.

I personally believe media empires should be destroyed the old fashioned way. By appointing your kids to the board and letting them run it into the ground. That's just my inner OT baller talking though.

So PEOPLE in Florida who serve on juries are somehow different from people in other states in regards to right and wrong? Not talking the "newsworthy notables" we see so often on the OT, talking at least passably normal people who would qualify for a jury.
Its a known fact (to lawyers at least) where the best places are to have a jury trial for guilt and for damages. I don't know about this area in Florida specifically, but yes, some jury pools are way more likely to decide "right or wrong" one way or another than jury pools in other areas.
Jury selection specialists also exist for a reason. Can get pricey.

Last I knew Mississippi and Georgia were the "Award States". The McDonald's coffee and another of the ridiculous high profile/high award BS consumer lawsuits were there. Florida was considered middle of the road.

The McDonald's coffee
Wasn't as bullshite when you read the facts of the case. That coffee was hot as shite. Scalded them pretty badly.
Everyone read "hot coffee" and ran with the story. It was more like volcano hot coffee.

Oh man. My mistake earlier responding as though you were a human capable of thought. Now that I see how fricking stupid you are I won't bother again.
I especially love your logic that a plaintiff doesn't deserve a big award for 3rd degree burns requiring skin grafts to her legs and genitalia but a wrestler deserves $140MM because his little pecker & racist tirade was broadcast online.

most coffee makers brew at about 200 deg
coffee is almost entirely water, which as you know can get no hotter at sea level than 212 deg
nothing "volcanic" about it

Perfect that this was announced hours after Deadspin published a story trying to get a guest on a Barstool show fired.

She was 79 years old and...
But ya, total bullshite case. How it got past summary judgment!
quote:
Liebeck was taken to the hospital, where it was determined that she had suffered third-degree burns on six percent of her skin and lesser burns over sixteen percent.[11] She remained in the hospital for eight days while she underwent skin grafting. During this period, Liebeck lost 20 pounds (9 kg, nearly 20% of her body weight), reducing her to 83 pounds (38 kg). After the hospital stay, Liebeck needed care for 3 weeks, provided by her daughter.[12] Liebeck suffered permanent disfigurement after the incident and was partially disabled for two years.[13][14]

^this. I actually feel bad for the lady because everyone uses the "McDonald's coffee" reference when talking about how messed up the legal system is here, when in actuality Mickey D's was heating up the coffee to like 300 degrees in the morning so it would stay hot all day and the lady suffered some pretty intense burns.
Posted on 6/10/16 at 2:40 pm to Mr President
You feel bad that a lady got $2.7 million in punitive damages against McDonald's in the early to mid 90s?

She didn't receive 2.7 million. It was reduced to 480k by the court. the parties settled for under $600k total.
You can just google all this.

It was 180-190 degrees, that's what was in the McDonald's operations manual at the time.
Also that would require them to put it under pressure which they don't do that shite with coffee in McDonald's.

not at mcdonalds...
as above, 180- 190 deg is where they hold it
not at 300 degrees and not at "volcanic" temps

Unsecured debt. Will get wiped out while secured creditors get paid, Hulks gets pennies on the dollar. Congrats.

If they have a microwave, then it can.
I don't really care about the details of the case. Just pointing out the basic high school water knowledge doesn't cover further details like super heating or cooling.
