Gas station owner ‘on verge of tears’ after undercharging for fuel in Tennessee

For a brief few hours, a convenience store in Tennessee was offering perhaps the lowest fuel prices of any gas station in the country — only the owner didn’t know it.

One customer, Henry DeHart of Chattanooga, knew something was wrong when, after putting 12 gallons of premium gas in the tank of his car, the pump’s digital readout displayed a surprising total: $5.64.

And the price per gallon? Just 45 cents.

With the average cost for a gallon of gas hovering well over $4 — and the price of premium gas in Tennessee at $4.64 a gallon — the deep discount would have been welcome if it wasn’t so clearly a mistake, DeHart said in an April 14 Facebook post.

DeHart went inside to explain the situation to the gas station owner, he said.

A language barrier caused confusion at first, so DeHart asked the owner for his receipt. The dollars and cents on the slip of paper spelled out the problem clearly, and the owner couldn’t hide his pain.

“He ran back around the counter [and] started poking at his screen and then turned green. Nobody had told him in the last 5 hours,” DeHart said.

“There’s no telling how much money he lost today. He was on the verge of tears,” he said.

How do you not notice the extra traffic?

I mean, I’m a little torn. When we find stuff priced stupid low, like I think a poster found an expensive bumper for super cheap, we just automatically feel like we got a win and the store is supposed to be diligent in catching their mistakes.

But this was a small business owner and not some mega corporation.

You would think everyone would have been telling their friends and the lines would be stretched around the block. Did no one come in and pay cash? How does that go on in a serious manner for so long?

Who made the mistake…or was it even a mistake and not sabotage on the part of a disgruntled employee?

I saw someone on Facebook announcing a similar issue in Prairieville a while back. Like “get yours before they notice!”. People don’t seem to mind robbing gas stations.

And they were happy to let it continue even after they got theirs, with no worries whatsoever for the store owner. I know things are bad, people suck, etc. but I’m shocked it took over 5 hours for someone to speak up.

I look at this the same way I do someone giving me back more change than they should if I pay in cash. I always tell them. Don’t want someone getting fired so I can have an extra 5 dollars or whatever

Yeah. I typically lean on the honest side, like I’ll tell the cashier at HEB if she missed my drinks on the bottom rack, and certainly won’t take advantage of a mom and pop store if they undercharge.

But I’ll be damned if I haven’t rushed to Amazon or Walmart.com when someone notices something 99% off in an obvious mistake and try to pick it up.

This happened to me once. Well not exactly this but the flow meter was busted on the pump and counted me for 2 gal when I got 12.

I went in and told the dude working about it and offered to pay the difference. He thanked me, let me have the gas at the price I paid, and got it fixed.

Eh, I understand the honesty angle. I really do. But there’s nothing dishonest about taking advantage of a perfectly legal deal, either.

It’s like a very low Key Robin Hood thing.

Which when you think about it just shows how variable our morality is.

ETA: man, this really has me thinking deep on this now.

I mean, I teach my kids that we don’t steal and we honor our deals, but also, we take advantage of a good deal when we see it.

I mean, think about Antiquetiger’s garage sale threads.

It’s all about finding things for less than the value than we can get for Them and making a profit.

Is making a profit inherently wrong? Of course not. That’s the whole point of a business. I guarantee you the prices on food and beverages are jacked up in convenience stores, but no one is brought to tears about that.

I guess it’s a grey area. As a business owner you make sure your product is priced at a point where you and your clientele are comfortable with. But ultimately it’s your responsibility to make sure things are as they should be.

It might be shady to take advantage of a mistake, but it isn’t stealing.

I got diesel for $2.59 last week. I realized it should have been $4.59 and even said so on the sign but the pump price was lower. I went in and told the owner and he acted like an a-hole about it and blew me off. Last time I try to be nice but it saved my like $50

Now they have a get out of jail free excuse next time they want to price gouge. Just please ignorance and show them this one time somebody got 12 gallons for less than $6.

So you’re supposed to make a profit when you buy gas or pay for a service? Good to
Know.
