I mean, he was a DI at Parris Island. He was originally just a technical advisor for the movie. After reading the script, he told Kubrick that the dialogue was not realistic/believable for the Hartman character. So he provided Kubrick with a tape of him being pelted with vegetables, standing at attention, and yelling out insults. Kubrick replaced the original Hartman with Ermy; the former is actually the helicopter gunner that kills women and children 'sometimes'.

I read somewhere that it wasn’t scripted. Incredible job by Ermy that whole first half of the movie
