We caught a ride with a long haired, hippie in a VW bus and he shared his marijauna with us.
WHAT?? Me too!
Did we both bum a ride in the same VW bus with the same generous weed-sharing long-haired bearded freaky hippie?

It did seem the majority of peeps who picked up hitch-hiking total strangers were more than willing to light up and partake with their new passenger / friend. Truly an amazing window of trust of and for our fellow man.
P.S. -- Let me guess -- 1972?

On the Houston hitch I had a cardboard sign that said “Baton Rouge” on one side and “Not Psycho” on the other and I would flip it as the cars approached. It worked.

My Dad was a student at Auburn from 1939-1943. ROTC was mandatory and he said he never had a problem catching a ride when in uniform.
My dad a student at Auburn in the mid 60’s said he picked up a hitchhiker who was in uniform while heading home to North Alabama one weekend. My dad asked him where he was heading and the guy said Guntersville which is about 45 miles from our home. My dad climbed in the back and told the guy to wake him up when he got to his house. Said he slept the whole way.

70s were amazing, not sure there were laws or parents watching us. But we did have good enough values to survive it.
Ted Bundy certainly loved them.

There were a lot of bad dudes out there, but people still went on with their lives.
Cant live in perpetual fear.

I’ve given a few hitchhikers rides. Haven’t done that in 20 years though. Last one I made ride in the truck bed.
Only times I’ve ever hitchhiked myself was backpacking. A couple times outside Glacier, where it is just expected. Once in the NC mountains when we got caught in a bad storm. A crazy older hillbilly couple picked up my wife, dog and me in an Oldsmobuick and proceeded to scare the ever-living shite out of us flying around in that thing in the rain.

8th grade, we used to hitchhike around the Marine Base at Quantico. For somewhat obvious reasons, never had an issue of any kind.
College, my friend and I picked up a young girl hitchhiker who was pretty good looking. In shorts and a scanty top. She asked if we would driver her out to Lake Texoma (about 20 miles depending on where you're going). Said she had a place on the Lake and strongly intimated we were going to get some. I whispered to my friend "this sounds like some Penthouse forum shite but neither one of us has the (whatever the late 70's version of "game" was) to have this girl give it up to both of us." I told my buddy that she probably had some friends waiting to roll us (my friend's family had a ton of money and he had a nice car). We let her out in Denison in a very public place.

hitchhiking is alive and well inside the safe space of americas nation parks and forests. It is a legitimate and common method to get from point A to B for many hikers

In the 60's a person in a military uniform could travel faster Hitching than riding Greyhound.
My shipmate dropped me off in Popular Bluff Mo. and I hitched to Monroe, La. The plan was, I was to meet him in the St Louis Buss station the following Sat night at 10:00 PM. I called the Bus station and they assured me they could have me there before !0:00. I drove to the bus station to buy my ticket and ride. Then, when asked they told me the Bus would not reach St Louis until 1 AM.
Hmmmm? I told my sister to drop me off on the Highway, north of Monroe where I proceeded to use my "Thumb". The last twenty miles I was picked up by a young man. When I explained my predicament he drove 70 mph (Speed limit was 55) to make my connection. We almost hit a deer. But I met my Shipmate at 11:00 PM. We drove from St Louis to Damn Neck Naval Station, Virginia Beach Virginia.
With all the Social unrest in the 60's it became to0 dangerous, IMO, to continue Hitching.
