How old is this guy? He sounds like he is a legend in his own mind. Go ahead and let him try out so he can be laughed out of the stadium.

I worked once with a guy who played at Marist, and one day we convinced him to play with our company softball team. He said he was offered a single-A contract but thought it was unlikely he'd get beyond double-A so he hung up his gloves. He played with us for the first time since college just to be on the field again.

He refused to bat though, said he didn't want someone to get hurt. But he'd zing the ball from deep left to our 2B guy, we got plenty of outs that way. Eventually he came in to pitch b/c he was the only player who could consistently hit the strike zone. Of course, any batted ball that came even close to him was an out.

single A guy thinks too highly of himself.

I used to work with a guy who played a bit for the Astros in 2005. He played on our softball team and had no problems batting. You can't hurt anyone when the ball goes over the fence almost everytime.

I wonder if he'll feel the same after getting hit with a 95 mph fastball bc his reaction time is too shitty to move out the way.

What kind of bitch gets out the way?

I don't think you understand,a company softball team is no where as competitive as a weekend team. I can see why the guy did not want to bat, a 3rd baseman or pitcher might get hurt at a company game.

Very true. I played years of very competitive softball afterwards too. You do see some absolute studs that played minor, some big league, and some that didn't play any level of pro ball. I played with some guys that were awesome at softball but terrible at baseball.

You came to the right spot. If he doesn't post here, he should. This place is full of major leaguers and guys who can squat more than Guice.

This sounds like the guy who went to Arnold for help with his posing routine. Thought he was a perfect bodybuilder and was far from it. So Arnold had him scream during his posing and the idiot fell for it and did it onstate during competition.

I once heard Orel Hersheiser say that the worst player on the worst team in MLB is likely better than anyone you've ever taken the field with. The guys at the AAA level aren't slouches.

Yup. Guy I know could throw 99-100 and never got out of A ball because no matter how hard he worked and how hard they coached him he never was able to move it. Just a little movement and he was on his way up.

Correction: When we were hanging around a lot, he had been stuck in A for a few years and was on a 2 year rehab after surgery. He ended up getting back in and did play some AAA ball. Never threw a pitch in the Majors though, and could get to 100 now and then while consistently throwing high 90s.

That shows you how hard it is.

He'll fail horribly but no reason to not try out.

Do minor league teams even have open tryouts?

Hitting 85 is very hard for the average person. It's not hard for a baseball player, which OP's friend is not.

He was mostly worried about accidentally hitting a grounder. During pregame warmups he demonstrated the point rather convincingly. There aren't too many company softball players who can confidently field a 100+ mph ball.

He understood the fielders weren't likely up to the task if he caught the wrong angle. Remember, he wasn't MLB and knew it. But he did know that anything he hit would be hard to handle for someone who wasn't used to it.

I have a close friend who was an all SEC pitcher and made it to AAA ball but never the majors.

I was a decent hitter in 6A high school.

He threw me 20 fastballs right down the middle and I foul tipped ONE of them. He was throwing about 85 mph and it looked like 200 mph.

So he was so good he might kill someone if he hit it at them, but not good enough to just not swing as hard.
