My friend, who is a lifelong smoker, was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease….and may die within the next decade???? No frickin way…. You gotta be shitting us all… Maybe get in a time machine and tell him to heed the surgeon generals warning from 1964.

It's sad knowing what will happen over the next year or 2, as her decline over the past year has been bad. She still functions and gets around fairly well, but little things like not going to a swim meet to watch her grandson swim because she can't walk up the bleachers is simply sad. I have given up arguing with her about it.

Yep. We have a genetic trainwreck in my family for heart disease and COPD. Despite all the risks and advice, my brother kept up with his lifestyle until the very end. It cost him his life. Now, my nephew at the ripe old age of 28, has no parents or grandparents.

Take care of yourselves brothers. You will most likely live longer than you think.

I was mistakenly diagnosed with COPD about 10 years ago when I had a persistent cough and shortness of breath for quite a while.

I did a breathing test administered by a licensed respiratory therapist and the results looked at by a Dr. Conclusion, onset COPD.

Things eventually got better for me and it turned out I really had a pretty bad bronchial infection that was giving me the symptoms of COPD when I got a second opinion.

Hopefully for your friend it is something similar. I was really dreading dealing with COPD after seeing how a friend of mines father was living after being diagnosed with it.

Today he went to the ER because he couldn't breathe and they diagnosed him. Talk about a kick in the head.

Hand up here. Same scenario three years ago and it's not a hugely big deal. Some steroids and inhalers will fix him up and keep him trucking along. If he has allergies he needs to be dedicated to taking his sprays and pills.

I always wondered why old people moved or snow bunnied to the desert. Every winter when breathing is harder I understand.

Insurance does NOT purchase portable oxygen for their patients with very few exceptions. It is usually not reimbursable either. It is always better to buy than rent if at all possible.

As far as maintenance is concerned, the POC manufacturer I represented did not normally fix units; it usually replaced them with a pre owned, refurbished unit of the same type. We did offer the ability to purchase a lifetime warranty, which was absolutely worth the extra cost.

You are absolutely correct about the battery life limitations at higher lpms and the home concentrator. I will say that buying a POC could allow a patient to double dip in that they can still have their insurance provide tanks and a home concentrator. So the tanks would act as a fail safe in a power outage situation. In 3 years I had many patients do exactly that.
