Serious as a heart attack. First time that land had been hunted in 10 yrs. Was back in 90-91 season.
He wouldn't have made it through the winter I don't think. Loggers clear cut the summer and fall. Deer weren't spooked. I killed my first deer a month before, a 5 pt. And 6 days after killing him, missed a massive 8 pt. Four times. Broadside. Buck fever had done set in.

No. All your points add up. I believe you. They loose mass dramatically after their prime. Clear cuts don't spook older deer. Those frickers are smart. I'm just shocked you bagged a 7+ year old deer. Truly amazing.

I missed him my first three shots.
I fell asleep in my stand. Heard something behind me. Eased up.. .nothing.. about 10 minutes later hear something on the ridge across from the one I'm on. There he is. Clear shot.. broadside... ... careful aim... click. Forgot to chamber a round after the climb. lol. Marlin 30-30... easy chambering.. boom.. miss. He takes off.. 2 more shots on the run missing.. and he's in a hella lotta brush. I see a clearing ahead where he's heading.. wait for it.. .wait for it.. he comes out... my IRON SITE completely cuts him from view.. he's about 150 yds away.. boom. I go to original spot looking for blood.. none. Follow tracks.. get to the clearing I last fire on him. He went MAYBE, ten yard. Hit him in the arse... thru the stomach, heart and lungs.. bullet was lodged between ribs and hide. I was lucky as hell. After blowing an easy 50 yd broadside shot.
