What I mean by gatekeeper is a person who either took a chance on you (gave you a job or car etc.) which allowed you to succeed in life or a person who went out of their way to make you were given the opportunity to succeed. I’m not talking about an immediate relative but distant relatives could count.

So who is your person that was your gatekeeper and how did they help you?

That's not what a gatekeeper is... that's just someone who takes a chance on you.

Nope. Worked my arse off my whole life and made my own opportunities. Not that I am shitting on anyone who had a little boost or a lucky break; it just wasn't in the cards for me.

I did get sage advice from my father, and later my father-in-law, that helped guide me.

After gettting out of the Navy in 2000, I was hired by a telecom startup in Washington DC

My future manager flew to Providence RI (I was still in CT)...Interviewed me over lunch and promptly flew back to DC

Job offer was extended despite my having ZERO experience in telecom. He was former military and wanted smart and reliable people for his Network Operations Center.

I'm hugely thankful for him because I had no idea how I was going to live at the time.

Mr. Harde Knox.

I’ve been a gatekeeper for a number of people. Never had one.

my best friend's dad gave me a job when i was 15. taught me what it was like to work for money. taught me to appreciate what my parents went through to provide for our family.

pushed attention to detail and pride in doing a good job.

been working ever since.

Your definition of a gatekeeper is a bit off, in my opinion.

However, to answer your question, yes a distant relative of mine gave me my first job years ago in the industry I'm still in today. He turned out to be a major a-hole though and I moved on. I'm now a competitor of his

Gatekeepers keep you out, investors offer you a way in.

Dad of one of my sister's friends gave me my first job at 15. Started out doing part time warehouse work a few days a week after school. Ended up working for him for 10 years and getting promoted to sales and management along the way until he sold the company. Didn't make me rich but it was a solid income for my age at the time and extremely valuable experience.

Perhaps "springboard" is a better word here?

You're more or less trying to describe a benefactor.

Gatekeeper is typically someone who keeps things out of something, not someone who does one a solid.

An acquaintance in a mgmt position pulled strings to get me hired in very low level position, the lowest actually. But everything I've done from there over the last 15 years has been all me (and God).
