French military jokes are pretty dumb. They have an impressive military history. They might have softened their touch a bit since WWII but losing entire generations of young men will do that to you.

If I didn't have a family I'd join the Legion. I don't really give a shite about France but it would be pretty fricking cool to say you were in the French Foreign Legion.

You don't declare war the German army and then give up when they invade you.

The French didn't want Paris bombed like Warsaw so they gave up. This gave a strong hold to the Germans to bomb London and other British cities. There is a great untrust between British and French people. We share in the views of the British.
America also lost thousands of men by having to take back France from the Germans. A friend of mine, Mr. Bill that I ate breakfast with every morning before he died stormed the beaches at Normandy and faught in the battle of the bulge.
Mr. Bill said he respected the Germans more than he did the French because they put up a bigger fight.

Ok, that's a nice story. My great uncle fought on islands in the pacific. That doesn't mean I view Japanese military history as existing in 1930-1940s bubble and I hate all Japanese.
My point is I think many Americans revert to a lazy analysis of French military history and make dumb jokes.
