On a new episode of Mike Drop Podcast, former Navy Seal Mike Ritland interviews one of the DEVGRU (seal Team 6) guys who helped negotiate and stop the Somali pirates during the infamous Captain Phillips episode of 2009.

Terry Houin, the Seal who took one of the sniper shots to take out the Somalians, played the entire ordeal down as just a simple sniper shot that they had all trained for with abundance.

"I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but the shot was probably about 50 to 75 yards. It's not 1,000 yds or 2 miles like everyone says and now thinks. It was really not a hard shot at all. But I'm probably not supposed to say that."

DEVGRU (seal Team 6)

DEV is badass but they aren't SEALs.

ETA: No knock on DEV guys here, the fact they can be pulled from most rates and still kick arse next to SEALs shows just how professional these guys are. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that can go toe to toe with these guys.

I may be mistaken, but everything I've heard/read was that the distance was not difficult. What made it hard was two ships bobbing up and down from the ocean.

Constantly accounting for height/angle is what made the shot special, not distance. In addition to the fact is was multiple shots simultaneously

Well, the DEVGRU team is made up only of Seals... So they are. Yes, they're a tier 1 unit seperate from the regular Seal Teams (which are Tier 2 units) but they are all still Seals, unlike CAG (delta force) that can be made up of guys from any service branch.

So when folks say Delta is Army, it's kind of true, but not really. Delta is an Army associated unit, and probably made up mostly of Army guys, but any service spec ops guy can try out.

In reality, all of those level units are under SOCOM and JSOC and now answer directly to the Sec Def instead of the heads of the Army, Navy, etc.

So what other Tier 1 groups are there? I find this stuff interesting but don't know much about it.

Yeah....I don't think anyone ever said it was the distance that made it difficult

Never heard or seen it portrayed as a long shot.

There are only four acknowledged Tier 1 special mission units in the United States military:

DELTA Force (1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta) – U.S. Army
DEVGRU (Naval Special Warfare Development Group, Seal Team 6) – U.S. Navy
24th Special Tactics Squadron – U.S. Air Force
Intelligence Support Activity (ISA) – CIA

I don’t recall anyone saying it was over 100 yards, the movie depicted it as a shot more in dealing with the seas, and the close proximity of the quarters and never mentioned the distance.

You’re confused. DEVGRU is slang for “Development Group”, which is all SEALs. I think you’re thinking of Delta or “Combat Applications Group (CAG)”. They pull from all branches but it’s 90% Army SF guys, mostly bc they have the easiest access to the assessment & selection process for Delta.

“I shot a Somali pirate in my pajamas.”

“What was he doing in your pajamas?”

“Dying.”

The movie didn’t portray it as a long shot. The ship they shot from was tied to the life boat

I’ve never heard of the 1,000 yard shot. Even the movie depicted some relatively close shots

Regardless of how far it was, you still have to time your shot perfectly with the rolling of the waves.

What a DICK. It was still a shot from boat to boat on the open sea. Big difference in that and having to account for you and the target constantly moving. Not many can make that shot.
Not to mention he put his first shot in an object the size of a paper plate
