Open punitive damages is the problem here. And $40 million in compensatory? No way that math works either. Stupid jury verdict. Judge should reduce the verdict before appeal.

But reading the article, obviously the jury thought they did as they assigned 30% of the blame to Pep Boys who apparently installed the tire(s).

After doing some research, apparently they installed the wrong load rating tire and it separated, causing the crash.

The argument is that installation of the wrong tire caused the crash, but the poor roof design (leading to collapse) caused the fatalities. Supposedly there is a history of roof collapses during F-250 rollovers, Ford knew there was a problem prior to this accident and didn’t address it, Ford didn’t adhere to their own design standards, etc.

I haven’t found a good enough summary of the actual evidence to form a strong opinion on the matter, but given Ford’s abysmal recall history it wouldn’t surprise me. Either way the punitive damages are a whole different argument.

there was a guy dropping large rocks or concrete chunks from bridges over I-35. He killed some people and injured others when the Rock crashed through some innocent person's windshield. I don't remember anyone blaming the auto

It is sad to say, but people who drive 2002 F150 probably aren’t worth 40 million in their lifetime.

The roof should not have collapsed. Period.

The amount is too high and will get reduced.

This is what I was thinking based on the accident photos with little body damage but the cab completely collapsed.

And yes I also agree the payout is absurd.
