I'm ok with this aspect of Star Wars but I can see why you think of it as that way. It's for that reason why I enjoyed the political aspects of the prequels with taxation, trade routes, and politics in the senate.
The prequels got a lot wrong but it nailed the politics of it. Star Wars is more than one family's drama. The entire galaxy and its way of life is affected by it and the prequels reflected that after being completely absent in the originals.

If you want to get laid, drop this nonsense now.

Dune has more sci-fi bonafides than Star Wars but if it has to be one or the other its fantasy.
Babylon 5 is another space opera SF/F hybrid that I really liked. The effects seem dated and the acting is a pretty even mix of awful and outstanding but there are several really memorable characters and the four year story arc is a great tale. And they present plausible technology, (at least for the younger races).

I gave Star Wars a shot. Watched the first 6 about 3 months ago. I honestly thought they were average, sorta. How the hell did they become so popular?

No. Objectively no. It is the epitome of science fiction. Science fiction is the imagining of how humans would react given a future change of technological and sociological changes. This is the dictionary definition of science fiction. This is what Dune is. It is statements about sociology, technology, religion, politics, and ecology. Furthermore, although some of the elements can be seen as far fetched everything in the novels are plausible given what was known at the time that the books were written. The farfetched aspect of it is what makes it fiction. Frank Herbert went to great lengths of research to ensure plausibility. There is no magic to it. Even beyond that one just has to look at the themes.

I see a lot more magic than plausibility but it's probably my favorite novel either way.

If you think that Dune is fantasy then for the same reasons you would have to claim that the Foundation series and 2001 are fantasy to have any consistency at all. Basically you are calling the most influential science fiction stories of all time fantasy.
There is no spirituality or magic to the Dune stories. If you think there is then you didn't understand them.

The kid mutates into a giant worm and then lives for thousands of years. You might want to google the word "plausible".
And all along I thought the Missionarie Protectiva and the use of religion to control populations was a major part of the story. I'm sure glad you came along to explain it all to me.

Star Wars is the pinnacle of Sci-Fi.
Avatar was just awful.

Same here.

Star Wars to me seems like a fantasy soap opera set in space. Somehow it's become the paradigm of science fiction in popular culture which is a real shame. From what I understand of its history the popularity around Star Wars had more to do with its revolutionary at the time visual effects than anything, yet somehow society hasn't been able to move on.
Agree completely. There are so many plot holes in the Star Wars series that it just ruins it for me.
