Cool graphic, but I also want to know is what the property tax %'s in all 50 states. That way you can get an idea of overall tax burden.

So I went out and found the property tax graphic. Data from 2024, but it was the most recent I could find...

This gives us a map that looks similar to this. (From 2022, but the most recent I could find).

Sales tax is a use tax. I prefer more of those kinds of taxes.

There are many ways a government can raise money to pay for what it does. Conceptually, I've always thought that having a high sales tax and low property tax hurts those that can least aford it. However, for states like La where there is a very high percentage of tourist visiting, it makes sense to have higer sales taxes. That way you can "extract" money from those outside of your jurisdiction without putting as much burden on your local citizens thru property taxes.

Only the dumbest among us think renters don't pay property tax. Everyone pays property tax. It's the fairest tax as no one can dodge it. Everyone has skin in the game.

And I paid about 14k in yearly property taxes in TX. I pay a helluva lot more than that in LA when doing property tax+income tax.

Ranked behind Louisiana is Tenneesee with an average sales tax rate of 9.61%. The biggest difference between the two states, Tennessee does not have an income tax.

We are now at a stalemate. The State of Louisiana along with East Baton Rouge Parish, has fricked us on taxes for long (ie Council on Aging...), that I will NEVER vote for ANY renewal or ANY new tax - EVER. I don't care if it's for FIRE, POLICE, STREETS, SEWER...frick em.

The only exception
: If they they pass a tax where ALL tax revenue collected is to be auto-deposit into my personal bank account. I'll vote for that one. Otherwise, frick em.

What if states brought back or levied sales tax on all EBT purchases?

We need to trade sakes tax for the more stable property tax, but yall have a fascination with a high exemption and absurdly uneven assessments.

Awful post. Property tax is much worse. You have to rent your lot from the government.

Government will never tax the government - how about recipients pay the sales tax with money?
