You are damn right it is still a thing, sir, and you or anyone else will not be disparaging it as long as I'm around, got it?
Seriously, when I don't have a clue what I want to eat, or I haven't been to a grocery store in a bit, I throw a piece of cheese on a slice of bread into the oven. Sometimes I go crazy and do a sugar cinnamon piece for "dessert".

My mom makes the absolute best dough burgers you can find. Also called slug burgers or weeks burgers here in NE MS. That was the burger you got when meat was running short before the weekly Saturday grocery store run.
It’s hamburger meat with a flour or other filler to extend the amount you can make with just hamburger meat.
It’s now a delicacy that is one of the things that makes Corinth MS famous. (Other than having a rail road crossing that was responsible for killing or wounding about 50,000 or so people in total).
The 2nd best at making them, Willie Weeks of Booneville, MS has sadly passed away. His old cafe trailer, a spot frequented by many of Northeast MS Junior College students in the day, sits empty and depressing.

Great list.
Buy day old donuts at a discount. The next mornings slice in half to turn a dozen donuts into two dozen.
Butter them up then toast until they start to turn brown on the edges.
Truly a gift from the food gods.

Nothing wrong with that.
Enjoyed it as a kid and still enjoy it today.

I'm still trying to figure out how I was a little chubby kid when I skipped school lunch every day to save my money so I could buy more CDs at FYE in the mall.

it was a treat to hit the thrift shop and get stale baked goods...at least goods priced 'within reason'.
i remember when 'bedknobs and broomsticks' came out you would get a discount on tickets if you brought in either thing to eastgate cinema.

Cold cheese and mayo sandwich slapped as a kid.
Yup…. Did a lot of shite on a shingle too. Our version was ground beef on top of toast. I think that’s where my taste for ketchup came from, trying to moisten that shite up a bit.
Crackers and milk…. Basically soggy arse cereal.
Go to was ground meat and potatoes on top of rice and round steak and rice n gravy when the gettin was good. To this day I’ll make the ground meat and potatoes every now and then and it takes me to a good place for about 5-10 min…. Makes the Ol heart warm. Good memories of my mom, since she’s gone for about 10yrs now.

This is not a poors food. Middle class version was made with cracker barrel sharp cheddar slices and and broiled till it got a little burnt.
Also cinnamon toast for breakfast

I’m glad you can look back on these memories fondly, not everyone is so lucky.
And I’m really glad that we weren’t poor.

i used to sit for hours with a beat up porcelain bowl shelling peas. i dont know where they even came from but i'd come home and there would be a MOUNTAIN of beans sitting next to a chair in the backyard and i knew what i was going to be doing that day.

My mom would do Christmas shopping the week after Christmas, when toys were half priced at western auto

Hehe, my aunt volunteered at the "bread cabinet" or "bakery something or the other" for her church. They got just piles of stuff donated, more than they could ever give away. She'd bring my grandmother (her mom) stuff once or twice a week.
My grandmother finally told her, "If you bring one more stale cake or loaf of bread into this house I am going to find my gun and shoot you."
True story.
