Flying and TSA

We don't fly often and it's been about 15 years since we last did. What does the TSA do? Xray luggage? Use K9s? Any advice on what NOT to bring in any of my baggage and specifically what I wont have problems with in carry on vs luggage. I've also heard that they will steal stuff. Any truth to that?
Just general advice on the process. Flying to Denver on Southwest if that makes any difference.

Knives, scissors and vibrators are all a no go in carry on luggage.

No liquids over 3oz in carry on. You always keep an eye on your bag, and at least everywhere I have been, if they wanted to look in your bag, they did it in front of you.

Brass knuckles are, too.
Get to the airport at least 2 hrs ahead. Wear slip on shoes and pants that don’t require a belt (if possible) - this will make it much easier. Keep as little in your pocket before going through TSA so you won’t have to empty them or worry about them losing your stuff.

Only your personal item or carry on. Once you tag it and drop it to check, they will check it when and where they want without you present.

Buy a fanny pack and some easy slip on shoes. Check everything else. It's the only way to travel.
