Astroturfing has been around for a long long time. The Citizens United decision helped make it a popular way to funnel money using fake companies or PACs. Koch Bros were pretty good at it.

Doesn't have to be a protest per se, can be anything proporting to be grassroots. It's been going on for decades and knows no one particular political alignment.
