Wondering how the state will determine that they are living with someone new? What criteria are they using? People will always find a way to game the system.

I read that some states require the ex-husband to get alimony insurance to assure the ex-wife can keep getting alimony after he dies.
So much for small government.

How does it define "moved in"? List as permanent address, Utilities in name, there xx days a month?
Good question. I’m not sure right off hand.
I know a former coworker had her alimony forfeited when she moved her boyfriend into her home with her a few years after her divorce. Something was mentioned about cohabitation and a sexual relationship, but not sure of the exact standard.
ETA: Quick Google search says there’s no “calculator” for alimony here and it’s instead at Judge’s discretion.

What are current alimony laws?
The whole concept seems ridiculous.
I understand child support (don't 100 percent agree, but understand it) and splitting of assets.
What is the purpose of alimony? Why does marriage entitle anyone to a lifetime income? Or even an income at all?

So many strong, independent women will be impacted!

In California if you divorce after only 10 years you are subject to alimony for life.
A California attorney said that it's common for women to file for divorce immediately after the 10 year anniversary, to get the alimony for life.
The attorney said that there are cases where the husband filed for divorce at say 9 or 9.5 years where the courts still granted lifetime alimony siting that the husband filed before the 10 year mark just so he could avoid the life long alimony.
Unbelievable

I wouldn't say "no matter the reason", but there should be limitations for how long the husband should support the wife.
The husband should only support the ex if he decides to leave for another woman or just because he feels like it. If she makes the choice then she’s on her own as far as I’m concerned. Women need men more than men need women and they should know that when they opt for a divorce they’re forfeiting any support from the husband.

I imagine it's an antiquated practice from a time when women were either not allowed or had very limited opportunities to have their own careers.

Ending this will cut down on gold digging whores.

Better dig for 2.

Any woman who chooses to divorce her husband, no matter the reason, has obviously decided that she doesn’t need or want his money any more.
Gotta disagree on the “no matter the reason” caveat. For instance, a woman leaving a marriage in a well-documented domestic violence situation who was forced to remain unemployed (a control tactic in DV situations) should get some support until she’s able to get back on her feet.

Good. I worked with a guy in Florida who got divorced at 45. The wife refused to work. He is still working at 78 because he had to pay her alimony payments.

You had your wife stay home and raise the kids while you work. She goes 18 plus years without any work and then you decide to run off with the pool boy. Now she is out of the house and realistically can't get a job doing anything because she's been at home for 20 years and no resume.
That's the basis

This is a great idea. There's no incentive for divorced chicks to do anything productive if they know they are getting a check every month for the rest of their lives.
This same fundamental component of human nature can also applied to all government handouts...take note.

33 years?!
She should have to come over to clean his house and suck his dick 3 times a week.

quote:Why wait until she remarries? It should end as soon as she moves in with a new boyfriend. The ex-husband is basically subsidizing her new man at that point.
it should never be allowed longer than the marriage lasted, and if the woman remarries, it should be ceased.
