I’d argue that the vast majority of TOCs are removed via flocculation and are gone before they even get to filtration.

In high toc water, yes most are removed in floc and filtration, but enough get through in a conventional system that you won't stay below the DBP level with a free chlorine system, especially with the warm water and .5ppm chlorine residual required by Louisiana. This isn't even factoring in the retention time in a large system like nola.

New Orleans actually has great tap water.

I like Nola so I'm not dumping on the city but the tap water is terrible.

Any idea what turbidity is before and after treatment?

Before, it's usually between 25-100ntu off the ms river depending on the season (currently around 30), and it stays below 0.3ntu per surface water treatment requirements off the filters. Most clarifiers will leave with below a 2ntu to the filters and let the filters take care of the rest.

Why would swimming in a lake or river be any better honestly? Same types of waste, feces, and chemicals run off into those all the time

Solution to pollution is dilution, water is less diluted in the city cesspool than it is in a river where most the runoff hits natural land. Not saying I think rivers are clean, but in this case they claim the pollutants are more concentrated.

Dude, you should hop over to the PT Board! You're about the break the 1000 downvote barrier. You should be there to witness it! It's the most glorious repudiation in the history of the board.

The small town where I live used to have fantastic tap water, untreated, from a local well.
Louisiana used to have great well water. Too much draw on it from agricultural, urban, and industrial uses dropped the water table to unsafe levels nearly statewide.

The water from the Abita aquifer is still some of the best water in the world. Baton Rouge and Hammond are lucky to have it.

Maybe so. But, it makes some of the best gravy, bread and coffee in the world.

I remember these hysterics about toxic sludge after Katrina. These people say anything dramatic to get on TV or in the newspaper.

Without New Orleans , an internationally renowned city, Louisiana would be even worse than Mississippi and Alabama.

Yea but they’re pretty strict when it comes to environmental protection on the river and do a pretty good job of keeping it free of pollution

Of course. Everyone knows that.
