Do your ground school via online courses, then go to Hammond

That's what's been told to me

how much?

ETA: I'll do it for $3.50, per minute, and that's almost a 50% pay cut, you'd be getting the bargain of a lifetime

That's just to get in the door.

You should double or even triple that of you plan to actually do any flying.

thats good advice
hammond airport is pretty light on regular traffic, it has a tower now you can talk to, it's large and well lighted, and generally easy visualize and comprehend from the air

there are certainly others in OP's part of the state though

$8500 is very reasonable for a private pilots license. He can probably do it for less if he’s smart about it.

probably the best way is to buy an old 152/172 and hire a CFI, when he gets ready to dump off the plane he'll probably be able to sell it for what he paid for it

If you have the cash to throw down that’s definitely the best way in my opinion.

I know insurance rates go up quite a bit if you’re using a plane for instruction. But is that just if you’re charging for instruction in it? Say OP bought his own plane to learn to fly in. Would he have to pay those higher rates if he just hired a CFI to instruct him in his own plane. Or say someone wanted to buy a small plane and teach his boys how to fly in it?

I don't know too much about the insurance end, and how instruction affects it, the last time I was serious about getting an airplane and started getting insurance quotes I was very surprised at how cheap it was, that's been a few years though
