In my neighborhood, a raised mailbox flag just alerts thieves to take your shite, even if it's a few dozen handwritten thank you notes that they then throw out the window into the rain down the street

My mom is 85 and lives in a rural area.
USPS is fantastic there for older people.
Not only do the delivery drivers pick up any stamped mail but they'll also sell stamps and even let people give them cash for boxes to ship if they leave a note in their mailboxes.
Same situation with my mom in CenLa. One day she asked me to check the mail for her and the mail lady had left a ziplock bag of fresh blueberries in the mailbox!

Mine fell off two years ago, and I’ve never bothered to pick it up, much less put it back on.

From the 1970’s until recently, when I’ve had no use for the flag, we could simply put the piece of mail along with some change for a stamp in the box and the mail carrier would take care of it. They would even leave change, if necessary.

Also they would leave money in the mailbox with a note of how many stamps they needed. He would leave X number of stamps or a "money order" and on to the next box.
Yep, I remember doing that in the eighties. I’d leave twenty two cents and my envelope for the postman to apply postage and a thank you note.

The flag is pretty pointless.
No one has an indicator for the garbage truck to pick the garbage up. It the can is there, it’s picked up. If not, they go to the next house.
Same with mail. If the mail is in there when they stop, they take it to send out, if not, they just leave whatever was mailed to you.

I don't even know if we have a mailbox and if we do if you can actually mail something from it. I assume we have one because I see the mailman in the neighborhood on weekends...delivering Amazon packages....but I assume they also deliver some mail once in a while????

Found out in La. in is actually illegal to have a brick mailbox. Box must be on a breakaway pole technically.
I don't even have a mail box, just a letterbox in the door.

if you aren't getting mail delivered they won't stop at your house, unless the flag is up
