A plea hearing is set for Tuesday.

Not quite.
There was only one staff member in the room and she is pregnant. The officer in question was swinging a belt and was armed.
The female staff member did remained in the room with the student until the parent left campus. She immediately reported the incident to her supervisor and to the police department. She is the reason why he was arrested.
