1. They use an authoritative parenting style. It's when parents have rules and enforce them, but also are warm and explain the rationale behind their expectations. This is opposed to an authoritarian style, which PsyBlog describes as holding kids to high standards without negotiating while being punitive and non-nurturing. According to a study published in the Journal of Adolescence, this kind of strict parenting style can be linked with delinquent behavior in adolescents. It's because kids perceive unbending, authoritarian parents as having less legitimacy, making teens more likely to rebel.

2. They travel with their children. Exposing kids to new cultures and locales exercises parts of the brain which can be under-utilized in a kid's normal environment. The Telegraph outlines research which has found that two systems--described as the PLAY system and the SEEKING system by a neuroscientist named Jaak Panksepp--are activated when kids travel, helping to grow and mature the frontal lobe. It's the area of the brain responsible for cognitive functioning, social intelligence, attention, motivation, memory, and more.

3. They play card games with their kids. Experts have found that playing card games can improve math skills, memory and strategic thinking, promote conversation, and strengthen family relationships. It can also build social skills, since verbal sparring, joking, and bluffing often are involved. "To be able to compete against parents and sometimes win is symbolically important to kids," William Doherty, professor of family social science at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, told The Wall Street Journal. "They get a sense that 'my time is coming,' a little foretaste of not being under the parent's thumb."

4. They exercise regularly. A few things are at play here. First, when parents are in better health, they have the physical and emotional energy to do what it takes to raise kids the right way. Second, it's all about role modeling--kids who see their parents exercising are more likely to do it themselves. And get this: According to a study published in Cell Reports, when men exercise something happens at the cellular level to affect their sperm, which is passed onto offspring who then have better capacity for learning and brain function.

5. They eat meals with their kids. According to the American College of Pediatricians, researchers have found that when families regularly eat meals together, kids are less likely to engage in negative high-risk behaviors. Congregating around the table makes kids feel secure in having structure in their day and helps parents assess how their kids are doing emotionally, behaviorally, and socially. It's also a place where children can see their parents respectfully interact, solve problems, and share their feelings.

Limit video game play. I know parents who let their kids play 8-10 hours a day during summer, 2-3 hours a day during school, and all weekend. It’s no wonder so many fatties under 13.

Can't argue with any of those.

I admit I do need to play more card games with mine. I taught them poker a couple years ago but we haven't played much. Chess is another one we should do more often.

Don't ever say what your dog will do, or your kid want do. They both will make liars out of you.

We do all of this with our kids. Travel is pretty much limited to regional, but we try to go somewhere interesting a couple of times a year.
My parents divorced when I was 15 or so, but we almost always ate dinner with Mom or Dad every night. We stayed with Dad during the week and ate breakfast together as well. I believe it does make a difference.
I have taught my boys Black Jack and we play chess and other board games regularly.
Video games are our biggest battle. They do not have video game privilege s from Sunday after dinner until Friday after shcool. When the weekend hits that's all they want to do. I try to get them out of the house and into the woods as much as I can, but the hour car ride there and hour ride home, they play their games.

The meals thing definitely happened in my house. My dad would talk about current events, politics, economics, and ask us questions on it.

I have anxiety and depression, yet I was still able to get a degree and a cpa.

What type of card games are they referring to? Uno and games like that? My dad taught me how to play poker and 21 at an early age, but his reasoning was that it's something everyone needs to know how to play otherwise people will hustle you.

I started out with a shoe box with change. I'd collect any change I could and put it in there, some kids had crown royal sacks, some had zip lock bags, etc.. And we must have been 8 or 9... playing for pennies and nickels. But we use to gamble on everything. Monopoly, tecmo bowl, etc.. That's when we had bad decks of cards and had to get new ones.

From that point until.. I'd say mid way through college, that's all we did. We had things arranged by whose parents wouldn't be home so we could play there.. If there was no place available we went to the city park.. There were times when we would have 17-18 player games of I Got It. Those pots use to get huge.

One summer, I think it was the summer either before my 8th or 9th grade year. My mom and three of her siblings and kids decided to do a camping trip. We drove to Wyoming. So we were on the road a lot. It was me and 4 cousins around my age. We were in a van. And we had a constant card game going. If someone went to sleep, took a break, whatever, there were at least two people still playing. Anyway, on the first day, the younger cousin of the group. He lost all of his vacation money, he had been saving for awhile, in less than 5 hours on the first day.

He started crying and told our parents we took his money. They made us all dip into our bankroll and come up with the amount he lost. I got some stories...lol.. I remember if we would come to my house and someone new and looked younger.. If my dad would see them, he would make us not let them play.. Because he knew we were just trying to clean them out..

Damn, I want to play cards.

I know it's a popular game, I saw it being played.. For a few seconds. But what's the big deal about this, that makes it different from other games? What is the craze all about?

Everyone gets two cards. You go around and people either say they got it or they fold. AA is the best hand you can have, KK, then QQ and so on. Depending on position, KJ could be a good hand. But lets say 4 people say they got it. One person wins and the people who losses has to match the pot.

White people are the worst. Name them anything you want, so long as you spell it normal.

And when you have a lot of people, and it gets to the point where several people have to match the pot several times in a row.. The pots can get huge. If 15 people play, $1 entry fee.. That's $15. 3 people lose, that's 3 people putting $15 in the pot. But we had pot limits, otherwise it would get ridiculous. People would be owing people money and that always turned into ugly situations.
