This is like asking what a starting banker's salary is.

$8.50 / hr to $120k / year. Kind of depends.

I don't think it is.

If it is, it isn't a very funny one. I've heard cats talk about 2200 and 2300 hour firms in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette. I think the implication is - that they pay you for that on day 1 and if you maintain that pace, you make partner.

But, as someone who once billed about 1900 in a year while juggling military service and three small children - frick every hour of that 2300.

A good bartender or waiter at outback will make 2X as much but hey they aren’t lawyers.

CPAs actually bill real hours

Do your clients look at your bill and decide, "No - it didn't take you that long to do that" and/or hire outside firms to audit your bills trying to squeeze your partner time down to associate rate, your associate time to paralegal rate, your paralegal down to nothing ("overhead") and tell you to get bent on copies and filing fees?

Because insurance companies do.

No because we have the reputation of being honest and not sleazy so they trust us.....

I'm joking, but also not

I thank sweet little 6 pound 8 ounce baby Jesus every single day of my life I don't have to do any of that shite any longer.

I LOVED practicing law. I HATED trying to get paid for doing it. And it isn't just the terrible, stingy, thankless clients, it's the heartless bastards running law firms.

Absent some novel situation, neither do lawyers.

It's cute that it only took you around 44 hours to bill 40 though. Cute.

I thank the same Jesus for no longer being in public accounting

The culture of "whoever works the longest hours is the best" instead of "who does the best work efficiently" made me want to kill someone

True of lawyers too. I also find that many have a personality where they exaggerate about how much they work.

That’s why you hold out and find yourself an in-house gig.

I'll pay a first year who is really good and has some significant industry experience $150k-175k but they better have real industry experience/knowledge AND can act & look like a professional.

It's a rare bird that can put in 2200 quality hours in a year.

I can use big words & at the start of my career I’d've worn a tuxedo to the office every day for $175k.

As long as I can keep my current schedule of 40hrs/week with vacation time defined as “reasonable.”

Probably an obvious answer but is the pay good in education law?

I’ve considered it in the past with my teaching experience.

Well that won't work for me and I'm not paying someone that to write a fricking Complaint or research case law. I can pay any dipshit to do that for 40-50k.
