I fired a guy on Easter Sunday once.

I fired someone via text message. He was always on his phone at work texting people. Constantly. I told him three times that his phone was a huge issue and could cost him his job. He didn't change so I sent a text and told him not to come to work anymore.

He got the message.

Start by asking each one, "What are your career plans after you leave our company?"

Firing people blows, especially if you've spent any appreciable time with them. I'm a naturally empathetic individual, which serves me well in sales, but it makes it difficult to put people I know in difficult personal situations. Bottom line though is...well, the bottom line and if the black could have been blacker and it's through a direct failure to perform then, yeah, they gone (with the proper paper trail of course )

The only professional/right way to fire is simple.
Don't start with "good morning/ how are you?/small talk.
Simply state that their services are no longer needed and you are terminating their employment.
If they ask why, simply tell them their performance was not meeting expectations.
If they push for explanation tell them "decision has been made and wish them well in the future.

More importantly, if you are managing properly, it should NOT be a surprise to them.

Engineers need to start adopting the work culture of these contractors to survive. You say jump they jump to work deadlines. Needs to be a culture shift.

Do you have examples of how they aren't cutting it? Have you given them feedback in the past along with clear expectations and an improvement plan? Make sure you are not jumping the gun.
