There was a cable program about all of this a few yrs ago, but can't recall the name..........but yeah, Finland seems to have a good educational system, and most of it has to do with high standards and expectations from families and teachers. Everyone is on the same page. No riff raff tolerated at all. And that is the major difference.

Are y'all suggesting that racial diversity might not be magic? Bc LSU has a well paid diversity coordinator

There are plenty of homogenous European countries whose educational system doesn't touch Finland's.

Well they only have 600,000 students, makes it a lot easier and makes it easier to be selective when it comes to teachers

We probably couldn't implement the Finnish system, which has been perfected for its demographics and culture, but we could look to countries which have a great degree of diversity and still score well on measures of education. We could look to the Canadian model for instance, as they have a large minority population and have a much greater language diversity yet score nearly as high as the Finns in certain metrics.

what are their demographics?
Pointless to point out in some Europian countries and is pretty much a non factor.

while Finland scores well on PISA, this particular league table is designed to test everyday rather than curriculum-based knowledge. This means that it lacks key concepts of importance for further studies in mathematically intensive subjects, such as engineering, computer science, and economics. This is an obvious defect: such subjects are likely to be crucial for developed countries’ future economic well-being.
The Finnish fan club rarely talks about its mathematics performance in TIMSS, an international survey focusing more on curriculum-based knowledge – which plummeted over the last decade. Finnish eighth-graders today perform slightly lower than seventh-graders did in 1999, lagging the top-scoring nations by a considerable margin. Not so miraculous after all.

A Finnish guy on redding pretty much said this is crap. He claims to have had tons of homework and was a part of classes with over 20 people in them.

At the end of the day this is all economics and behavioral economics. You get what you incent. Currently being a teacher in the US comes with minimal glory. Make it more attractive and you will get better, more passionate teachers.
As far as the cultural components- I am not sure what to do on that. The folks that struggle the most already get everything they need for free- food, housing, cell phones, and others. The work ethic has deteriorated and is now passed on. The incentives and rewards to work are less than that of the incentives to do nothing.

Amazing what can be accomplished when you don't have to pay for a military and someone else carries the load

600,000 Finnish vs 1.1 million U.S. students
I think a big part of it, other than Finland not being full of trash, is the teacher to student ratio. More face-to-face time more than likely improves students' learning abilities.
I got that Louisiana education though, baw.

1.1 million U.S. students in New York CITY, lol.
I tend to think there is something that has to be sacrificed to start getting into the Top 10 educationally. Finland is small, probably has high taxes, and doesn't have any diversity comparatively. The US is trying to teach millions, keeping taxes low, and accommodates for a huge melting pot of diversity hence the low scores. Korea is in the Top 5, but those kids sacrifice their lives for academia (literally sometimes).

Are they seriously trying to bitch about student-teacher personal interaction while saying we need to cut back the amount of teachers we accept into teaching programs? We already have a shortage of teachers (not even good ones) with a much larger population. That comparison is fricking stupid.
Exactly.
America has a larger population and too many different culture groups, diversity, etc bogging down the system.
It is a shame, because parents are almost forced to send their kids to private schools even after paying taxes for public schools, which the federal government has run into the ground, as they usually do.

How about some statistics to show the socio-economic demographic standards between US and Finland.
I'm willing to bet they correlate almost identically to the performance of students in the school systems.
So, if that's the case, should we also give everyone $1M?
This graphic is dumb

if you look at data while controlling the student's income variable, the US isn't that much behind the top countries, if behind at all ... not complaining about unequal income or anything ... just stating what i've read in several places ... course, higher income is the result of behavior, more than anything else ...
