I believe most GC operate under a strategy of just to ignore you during the building process and you’ll eventually give up on everything but the most critical items or run out of time to argue. Our house had two exterior deck lights within 12 feet that were 6 inches off being level with each other. I told him when the holes where cut for electrical….nothing….after the brick ….still nothing….lights hung…nothing. He basically said then it was too difficult to change.

I had to postpone the closing and tell him I was going to walk for that and other shite to get fixed…which his guys did in an afternoon.

Same thing with the appliance cut outs for the cabinets. Same thing for the cabinet knob hole cut outs. Had several doors that swung the wrong way. I’ll never build another house if I can avoid it.

We lost quality work when Mexicans came. As Americans we chose cheap and fast over quality

I don't think you've had the pleasure of dealing with white methed out crews lately.

The days of taking pride in one's work are pretty much long gone. Oh, sure they still exist, but they're the people that charge an arm and a leg for their work, because they know they're worth it.

My FIL is in his early 70s

He bases everything off of a shop he built about 35 years ago.

Odds are he used baw-engineering without permits or following code (or the code has changed dramatically in 4 decades).

So now a guy restrained by actual rules looks like he's doing a bad job.

It's a tale as old as time.

Because meth heads are the only ones still willing to work for the low prices.

FIL had a second electrician come out and said that all the work the first done was acceptable and up to code....FIL is now in the process of getting a third opinion.....LOL

frick your codes and rules.

I built a new woodworking shop, put in a 100 amp subpanel, wired in one 30 amp outlet, 4 20 amp 240v outlets and 6 15 amp outlets. Wired in a disconnect box for a mini split, etc.

I didn't need a permit nor an inspection. I didn't have to notify or ask a single other person.
