these were 15's. I thought BC has F-18s?
Belle Chasse is a joint reserve base so they have a bunch of stuff that you wouldn't normally see together.

There are 15s and 18s in Belle Chasse.
The 15s fly much more frequently. They usually train over the gulf so unless you are close to the base or between the base and the gulf you will rarely see them.

I remember watching the sabres fly over fishing behind there as a kid and when they got phantoms how much louder the phantoms were.....

Yeah, the Phantoms were not known for their subtlety and stealth.
It takes a lot of loud to make a brick like the Phantom fly.

They could be relocating because of Dorian. Barksdale AFB is temporarily housing 60 F-16s from Shaw AFB in S. Carolina.
This is a good probable reason. When at Tyndall we had to fly ours out every year a time or two when the threat of hurricane got pretty serious.
Sad to see what hurricane Micheal did to my old base

And just in case the Navy ever wants to lay claim to a better fighter, just refer them to this story

When I was stationed at Misawa A.B. Japan, F-4's from whatever Navy carrier that was stationed just off the coast would do those land and take offs regularly at the main base. We were on "The Hill" a few miles from the runway and those suckers would swing right over us on their flight path, mostly at night, early morning. Loud as frick.

"Touch and Go's"
And there wasn't ever a more annoying sound than the J-79's on Phantoms back then

I guess its been about 40 years ago, a couple of F-4's did a low level fun run down Florida Blvd. Took out some windows of the Blue Cross building and American Bank on Wooddale.
A-10's have been gone a long time

A-10s left Belle Chasse in 2005 I think.

I agree on the J79 but the Air Force T37 could give it a run for its money on the ground. Especially if you were hungover.

We have A-10s at Ft Polk. I was at my camp one year at Toledo and was woken up by the constant sound of low flying jets. Walked out to the edge of the bluff by the lake and there was a boat out in the middle of the lake and for about an hour, 10 or so A-10s would approach from the south, dive at the target and then pull up and circle around and do it again. One of the coolest exercises I’ve ever gotten to see.

I remember the A-10s at England AFB when my brother was stationed there.
