Friend had a fence build and the ran the pickets level across the top, even when the ground dipped a bit and let a 4” gap between the ground and fence, here is a picture to help. Is this correct? To me they should move with the ground in a non drastic manner.

The should’ve kept the top level, but a few inches lower, and cut the boards at the bottom to fit the ground.

no idea what's correct, but aesthetically IMO

gently sloping land - fence top/bottom should follow

jacked up turf - level fence top/bottom and fix your yard (this is your friend's situation)

I had this issue and did mine about an inch above the ground and cut the dogears. The fence wasn't the same height in all places but it looked better

Or leveled the ground first. Pretty cheap thing to do considering the money spent on a wood fence. Bust it up, get a 2x4 and drag across. Throw down sod.

It should gradually dip when there's a slope. It's hard to tell but his yard looks like it has a bunch of random dips or ruts. Probably should have leveled his yard before he built the fence.

I've seen worse, but he could've gone lower to the ground.

I was thinking add some dirt or sod or both.

Here is a better picture, to me it looks like they just ran it level all the way down instead of measuring from the ground up.

Something like this might be an easy fix.

Sod is your better bet. Simply piling dirt at the fence is a waste. It will wash away.

Does he want his dog to get out?

Because that's how his dog is going to get out.

The top of the fence should be level or a gradual dip, not peaks and valleys the entire way.
