House Democrats introduce a bill to legalize marijuana and provide 'restorative justice' to communities impacted by the war on drugs

Barbara Lee , D-Calif. questions Budget Director Mick Mulvaney on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, May 24, 2017, during the committee's hearing on President Donald Trump's fiscal 2018 federal budget.

Cory Booker's legislation introduced in the Senate in 2017.
A group of House Democrats on Wednesday introduced a bill to legalize marijuana at the federal level and expunge the federal arrest records of those incarcerated for marijuana use and possession.
The bill, introduced by California Reps. Barbara Lee and Ro Khanna and co-sponsored by twelve House Democrats, is a companion to Sen. Cory Booker's Marijuana Justice Act, which Bookerintroduced to the Senate in 2017.
Beyond removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, the bill goes a step further to provide "restorative justice," to communities disproportionately affected by marijuana arrests and create an "inclusive industry from the ground up," Lee said in a Wednesday afternoon call with reporters.
Lee called the legislation, "a bold proposal to reverse decades of discriminatory drug enforcement and to bring federal marijuana policy in line with the wishes of the American people."
quote:
To do that, the bill will create a $500 million community reinvestment fund that will focus on job training for the nascent cannabis industry and will prioritize communities that have suffered a disproportionate number of marijuana arrests for recreational-sales licenses.
The bill will also cut federal funding for state law enforcement and prison construction if the state disproportionately arrests low-income or people of color for marijuana offenses. Part of the community reinvestment fund will be funded through these cuts.
"It's the reverse of the 1994 Crime Bill," Sen. Cory Booker said on the same call. "It creates incentives for states to change their marijuana laws."
While the House bill already has twelve Democratic co-sponsors, no Republicans have signed on to either the Senate or House version yet.
finally

If and when it does become legal, intelligent millennial entrepreneurs are gonna hop on that train and make lots of money very quickly. It would be great for the economy and we all know it. I'm a conservative myself on most topics, but weed needs to be federally legalized immediately and there are stats for days to help that case out.

Makes too much sense for it to actually pass.

Why don’t they start slowly and reclassify it first? Then go from there. We all know that they’re not going to come right out and legalize it altogether. Start with baby steps.

If its made legal why would they be arresting people? This bill doesn't sound like it's legit at all but just Booker screaming racism.
Why not put up a serious bill that has a chance of passing. Because this one is DOA.

It would be legal federally, not legal in every state.

It's not about future arrests, it's about states that previously disproportionately arrested low income and people of color for marijuana offenses.
So you can guess what kinda states will be affected and which ones will be benefited.
It's all to get the money to pay for the reinvestment bullshite.
I'm all for legalizing it, but I'm not for creating a fund to make drug dealers businessmen. They aren't dealing drugs cause they think weed should be a legal business... they're dealing drugs cause they can't get a real job and don't want to actually work and pay taxes.

I agree but tbf, the article said it would be for those arrested for use/possession. Didnt see it mention funding anyone arrested for selling it.

The first half of the bill (legalization) is way overdue but the politicians just couldn’t help themselves and had to frick it up with that SJW / racist / typical Democrat community slush fund bullshite that will guarantee to make this bill a partisan non-passable piece of legislation. Assholes.

There's a reason I didn't post this on PT. I was hoping to avoid the 2 party shite. The bill would help those who've been arrested to get business licenses and expunge their records for said offense. How is this a bad thing? I don't see people calling for big pharmaceutical CEOs (the biggest drug dealers in the world)to be thrown in jail because their Afghanistan imported opiates are killing people left and right.

There's a reason Booker's bill was introduced in 2017 but still hasn't made it out of committee. It likely never will. We all know damn well Congress could push the issue to the forefront if they really wanted to.
I think this is an issue many on both sides of the aisles can agree on for once, yet Congress still lets it fester.

Of course it does. DC can't let people have freedom and money. That's just crazy talk.

No need to ruin this with SJW slant. And get Booker as far away as possible. He's an outright cancer for this country.
All it takes is one page from Congress - Marijuana is not schedule 1. Period. They could draft it, vote on it, pass it, and Trump could sign it, all in one day.
