The Federal Communications Commission is poised to approve a new broadcast standard that will let broadcasters do something cable TV companies already do: harvest data about what you watch so advertisers can customize pitches.

...Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. and other TV station owners say the new standard, known as Next Gen TV, will provide sharper pictures and video on demand. It will also allow them to track viewers of their programming on tablets and other platforms.

...Because the new standard is designed to be compatible with tablets and mobile phones, broadcasters expect to reach viewers away from their home TV sets -- and learn their habits.

“We’ll know where you are, who you are, and what you’re doing -- just like you do now, just like everybody does now, the internet does, or Google, or a Facebook,” Sinclair Executive Chairman David Smith told investors at the Wells Fargo Technology, Media & Telecom Conference Nov. 8. “We will have perfect data all the time.”

Especially if they're tracking location too some of these customized ads are going to end relationships.

You can avoid it by not watching their channels.

Sinclair Broadcasting is about as scummy as it gets.

I'm not worried though. Unless they buy every VPN, torrent site, Plex and Netflix they won't have anything on me.

In small market areas the lack of advertisers available is gonna severely thwart this.

There's only so many ways Johnny's Auto Lot can pitch their BS MSRP falsehoods. There's only 1 or 2 furniture places to falsely act like they're your good old buddy, just come on down to the perpetual sale.

It's still gonna be the man: in the hat; on top of a tractor-trailer; standing in the woods, 1 call does it all, amberlamps chaser.

or "rewards" programs at walgreens/cvs/rouses/etc? They try to get you back in store with coupons and incentives, sure. But the main reason for those programs is to track who buys what, how much, and when. And that data isnt just used for their store, they sell the data for huge profits.
