quote:this has happened to me years ago. Got an email from a partner asking me to go scoop up some 100 dollar Apple gift cards. Being 7:30 in the morning and not having my morning coffee, i just skimmed the email and went straight to the store to buy them. Bought 500 bucks worth and went back to office. I email back that i had the cards and the "parnter" replied to read the numbers off the back to him.
Those scammed lost $2 billion in business email compromise scams, which occurs when scammers pretend to be a supervisor or co-worker and ask for money or gift cards.
Dawned on me instantly after he said that. I was so pissed, because i couldnt return the cards and I never used apple products

I eventually gave them away to a friend years later

Hard to have boomers realize they don’t have to answer the phone because it’s ringing. If it’s not in your contacts let it go to voicemail. Can’t break the old landline answer every call habit.

We should make the foreign countries where this stuff originates from put a stop to it and refund monies. If not, bombs away.
We have special forces just sitting around and our military budget is in the trillions.
Give them something to do. They don't have to kill them, but that would be great, just rough them up something fierce.
Nah, just go in blasting... hate those scamming fricks.

That's definitely part of it, although my dad is slightly old for a boomer. But that traditional habit of thinking of every phonecall or message as something important to be addressed...definitely adds to the stress.

It is not in the least bit surprising that old people are getting scammed frequently with modern tech, AI, etcc.
My MiL has a masters and is a very smart and wise woman and she sent $300 in visa gift cards to some a-hole in India.
She asks me all the time when she thinks it’s a scam but they got her on this one.

Teach your elderly parents about it. I have.

What's surprising?
The 50-59 age group were the second group and also not considered “seniors”. That demographic is generally at or approaching retirement and very observant of their finances. Also, pretty much have their faculties and not tech ignorant.

Smart people don't talk to anyone with an Indian accent nowadays.
