Both were difficult but a lot of Bret being difficult was a “Where are we headed with this?” mindset, from being a promoter’s kid.
HBK’s mindset was being a spoiled drugged up fricking brat who was going to be at the top with all his buddies and frick everyone else.
Survivor Series happened in particular because he had to be an immature fricking troll when Bret was trying to be gracious, which sewed the seeds for Bret not to want to do business with him.

Razor Ramon def. Shawn Michaels, WrestleMania X, Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Championship
Edge & Christian def. The Hardy Boys & The Dudley Boyz, WrestleMania X-Seven, TLC Match for the Tag Team Championships

My favorite has always been Owen vs Bret at X.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Brett was a mark for himself and you’re right he didn’t like the creative that launched the most profitable era of wrestling ever to that point. If we would have taken Brett’s route we never would have gotten to the attitude era…..thankfully HHH, HBK, Stone Cold, and Rock finally convinced Vince.

Stone Cold was launched BY Bret being willing to work with him.
Austin and HBK had only two singles matches I remember, which were KOTR 1997 and Wrestlemania 14. That was from the “losing my smile” era through his initial retirement due to a back injury.
And if HBK had his way, Rock would have been out of the company. Those two have heat going back to when HBK was working for Lia Maivia’s Hawaiian promotion when Rock was a kid.

And how they originally wanted it to be Piper vs OJ Simpson.

Bret shared just as much blame. "I can't lose in Canada!" Montreal is like 2000 miles from Calgary. You do what the boss says, especially when you're about to get paid $2.4 million a year for half the schedule.

The reason it got to that point is that HBK had to run his mouth about how he wasn’t going to job for anyone, especially Bret.
Was Bret right? No. But HBK caused a huge shitstorm because he was either trying to be a troll or was honestly expressing his philosophy. Neither of those is good if the idea is you want people willing to do business with one another.
Add into that HBK’s penchant for losing belts in ways that didn’t involve getting pinned (reversal of tag title wins twice, stripped of IC title once, losing his smile and the WWF title, forfeiting his tag title twice, etc) lends itself to Bret’s position.
This doesn’t even go into him demanding to win the Euro title from Bulldog in a UK-only PPV where Bulldog had promised his dying sister he would win, which was the original plan.
That crosses over from protecting himself to being a selfish prick.

Bret's the one who physically attacked him that summer so HBK was right in not wanting to job to him.

And why did that happen? Because HBK was pissed at Brer for missing a TV cue and Sunny for dumping him for Candido, so he implied Bret was fricking Sunny on the air.
And then he got pissy when Bret told him that shite was over the line, leading to the confrontation in question.
For someone who gets in so many fights, you would think HBK might have actually won one at some point.
Nope.
Got his arse kicked by the Harris Twins, Jannetty, a marine who reached through a car window, Bret, the fricking janitor…
Maybe that was a sign he shouldn’t provoke fights.

The Sunny Days stuff could have easily been put off and just part of the story between Shawn and Brett…..Brett is the one that blew it up. He was looking for a reason to be a little bitch just like he did his whole career….he was a bitch about WM9 and them ultimately putting the title on Hogan via Yokozuna even though the whole world could see that Brett wasn’t working as champ.

Anything with Bret Hart losing is my favorite lol

I find Bret walking out of WM9 as champ to be beneath Yoko walking out as the monster heel champ but above Hogan winning in a horseshite impromptu match then disappearing to Japan with the belt for a tour.
Honestly, they should have had Yoko win, dirty or not, then booked him as the big monster heel they did from King Of The Ring through Mania 10. Having him lose to Hogan in seconds tarnished him, then having him win again due to Hogan having a fireball go off in his face was even more horseshite.
In short, Vince was trying to go with a more realistic card (less steroid monsters, more technical wrestlers and big fat heels) but still booking it like a fricking cartoon between that crap, the “double Doink” finish, etc.

Don’t forget the gimmick battle royal at Wrestlemania X-7. Simply for Bobby Heenan and Mean Gene calling it.
