Where I would love to retire

I only passed through, but Wallace Idaho seemed awesome

West Yellowstone will always have a place in my heart

Absolutely hated the flathead valley from a living there perspective

Seward AK was awesome, surrounded by mountains and water. Mountains might not be but 3000' but when the elevation is 5' they seem larger than they are.

Sedona is awesome, but i could see where it could get old in a hurry.

Moab/castle valley, if it counts, was a lot of fun.

Haines, AK. On the coast, but home to a lot of extreme sports stuff in winter. Not overrun with tourists, no chains, everything is "local" and authentic. Plus it's gorgeous.

+1. Awesome place. Talkeetna is pretty great too. Both are a bit marginal for being "mountain towns" though they are surrounded by mountains, but neither has any real elevation. For towns in the mountains Wengen and Zermatt have been mentioned and the scenery is stunning.

Eh, Park City is ok. I would rather move to Heber City. Life is just a bit slower there and you are closer to the rivers.

Love Sun Valley.

But I am going into early retirement in Missoula, MT. Yep, it is kinda quirky, but there are 5 world class trout streams in that valley alone.

Recency bias, since I was in both less than a month ago, but these are absolutely incredible!

Also agree with both Red River New Mexico and Blowing Rock North Carolina as honorable mentions. I had in Brevard North Carolina as well, and though it is not quite what I would consider a mountain town.

Beautiful valley that Heber City sits in.

Only drove through, but seemed legit. If you're a fly fisherman I can't think of a better place
