Evening all, I recently hit a small windfall and instead of tithing like I normally would, I am thinking about donating the money elsewhere. Many reasons why.

Anyway, what are your favorite charities to donate to? I was thinking about st. Jude.

Hoping for some serious responses. In before subtle brag.

I like St Jude, the Salvation Army, and a couple of wildlife conservation organizations that focus on hunting....

Not donating to anything that has to do with putting people through college. College is a waste of time and money. I may could get behind some wildlife conservation with hunting emphasis.

Only reason I didn’t just immediately jump on St. Jude is I see their CEO makes a million dollar salary. Seems pretty excessive for a non profit.

For comparison Salvation Army ceo salary is like 13k

Fisher House

Lots of info on their site. Too much for me to post ATM. Very good organization that works with service members and families for very important medical issues/housing while in treatment. Many other functions as well. Probably one of the better military organizations out there.

True, but their primary mission is to deliver world class healthcare to children without charging them anything. Running a healthcare enterprise like that requires a whole lot of expertise and saavy...let alone doing it without billing the patients. In order to get someone who can do that effectively requires that you pay a competitive salary.

also true

but that also should come with a stringent system of checks and balances, even more so than what the IRS may or may not see

i like to do research to make sure it’s a charity that doesn’t pocket large percentages of donations for administrative payables and ops.

you can use this site to help find one.
local no kill shelters
aspca
alzheimer’s association
hilarity for charity (seth rogan’s alzheimer in-home care and research charity)
susan g komen
casa
against malaria
unicef
red cross
michael j fox foundation
