Damn. What a terrible tragedy and having his wife and child on board makes it so much worse.

It's inexcusable regardless of the cause of the crash in my mind and I mean no disrespect to the families, but to take that risk assuming the facts are true blows my mind.

this, the baby had no choice, and to compound this, his life insurance policy(s) will likely be nullified or certainly contested because of his willful, reckless, and illegal act

He might have recently passed his checkride and it is just not updated yet. Could have been totally legal.
But still bad ADM to take your whole family up at night in questionable weather with limited flight experience. Not to mention that rural area is dark (black hole effect).

I hope so. It won't change the fact that they're all deceased, but maybe it will take a wee bit of the sting out of it for the families.

I'm not a pilot, obviously, but even to me, it doesn't seem like a wise choice.

There is no valid reason for an inexperienced pilot to take his family to dinner at night in a helicopter when the restaurant is maybe a 45 minute drive away. The guy made that decision for completely selfish reasons and his family died as a result.

I just don't get living in Kinder and flying to LC for dinner.

ETA: I don't want to come off like I'm speaking ill of the dead. He owned a car dealership from what I gather, so I'm sure he had plenty of solid transportation in vehicles. By the time you get the helicopter, take off, land and get to the restaurant, you probably could have arrived sooner in a car.

Probably just liked flying.

I have an old car that takes longer to get out of the garage and get ready than any of my other vehicles but I still get it out to drive to church and stuff just because I like driving it.

Well, I guess if you only had a learner's permit to drive and took your wife and 2 yo out for a stroll in rainy conditions with no headlights at night and crashed into a tree.......

Yeah, you're right

Myself included. Interestingly, the R22/44 is the only helicopter I am aware of that has a FAA SFAR requirement and for good reason(s). FAA SFAR 73

Did I read that correctly that you have to have both the awareness training AND 200 hrs of stick time till you can take this thing out solo?

And this guy just got signed off in April of this year? 200 hrs is a decent chunk to have fulfilled in six months, or no?

I'm guessing not. They were Pentecostals and it appears all of both families are as well. That doesn't mean they don't drink, but I suspect it minimal and not often.
