Family of Lion Air co-pilot sues Boeing in Chicago over fatal crash

The family of the Indonesian co-pilot of a Lion Air flight that crashed in October, killing all 189 on board, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Boeing Co in Chicago, adding to litigation piling up against the manufacturer in its home town
quote:
A preliminary report by Indonesian investigators focused on airline maintenance and training and the response of a Boeing anti-stall system to a recently replaced sensor but did not give a cause for the crash.
One of the investigators, Nurcahyo Utomo, told reporters it was too early to determine whether or not a new version of the anti-stall system, which was not explained to pilots in manuals, was a contributing factor.

FYI. Days before the crash, Lion Air maintenance crew replaced a sensor that ultimately gave erroneous readings on altitude and angle of attack. They appear to have not done that properly. The pilots in previous flight in that plane reported weird readings, but it wasn’t addressed.
quote:
Maintenance workers had failed to repair the sensor despite pilots’ reports from a flight the previous day that suggest the anti-stall system engaged incorrectly on that flight as well
I guess the plan was to have poorly trained pilots white knuckle it without knowing altitude.
The airline knew that there were reports of issues, and they kept the jet in service anyway.

There’s too much shite on these planes, I don’t trust these younger foreign pilots

Boeing will win.
Other airlines all say Boeing told them about this new feature and they trained their pilots appropriately.

Does Boeing have the Lion-Air maintenance contract? Don’t know how Boeing would be at fault. Sounds like the same bullshite that people try and sue gun manufacturers for. “If you didn’t make this gun, I’d still have my - insert whoever the frick.” It’s Indonesia, those frickers are reckless anyway.

foreign pilots
Not to sound "dickish" but I suspect some cultures (from which some of these pilots originate) place zero or very little value on human life and simply don't care.

Mention of them suing Lion Air?
Wonder if they've heard how much the US judicial system has f-d over companies with high litigation costs/settlements that they are just looking to ride that a nice pay day.
Arghhhhhh litigation lawyers gonna get paid.

First of all, ifthey find the voice recorder, their lawsuit will lose easily. if
Secondly, Lion Air is one of Boeing's largest customers. Boeing and Lion will both take equal blame so their business relationship remains intact.

Pilots should have disabled the system and flown the damn plane. Same crap got some AirAsia pilots few years ago and the Air France crew in 2009.
FLY THE PLANE
FLY THE PLANE

Anytime and commercial jet crashes the blame circle starts. Airlines look to blame either ATC or Aircraft Manufacturers, Manufacturers look to blame ATC, Pilots, or improper maintenance which falls on the Airline ,and family members sue all.

Sully would have handled that while taking a nap

Southwest, AA, United, Westjet, Air Canada, Hainan, Ethiopian, GOL, Aeromexico, Copa, China Eastern, China Southern are some of the carriers that fly the MAX-8, or MAX-9. Boeing isn't at fault here.

Sully didn’t need no stinkin checklists.
He turned on that APU and turned for the Hudson.
That’s an American pilot for ya.

FLY THE PLANE
What exactly does this do, just provide a warning? What were the conditions they were flying, VMC or IMC?

This sounds like an airline issue, not a Boeing issue.

It was VMC. But it was dark I believe. Early morning flight.
When the aircraft is on autopilot the AOA system apparently can detect a stall and nose down to recover. But it was inaccurate and they didn’t recognize quick enough.
