it has very obviously allowed society to progress in the ways of how we share information and communicate
The ease of sharing information (whether fact or fiction) and changing how we communicate is a good thing in your opinion?

I tend to agree with this. A sounding board for everything you agree with and believe in. Constant validation of your beliefs and morals whether they are right or wrong

The problem is apparently people, especially old people, did not learn that everything you read on the internet is not true. So when somebody posts something that looks like it came from a reputable source, people lose their minds and run with it as if it were true. This is a constant on facebook.
Example: Now we have women afraid to go to the mall by themselves because Karen posted that “The new gang initiation is to put a receipt on a persons windshield and wait for them to get it. Then they carjack you and rape you. THIS IS CONFIRMED BY THE LOCAL POLICE AND CHANNEL 3 NEWS JUST DID A SPECIAL.”
This type of shite gets shared millions of times by complete fricking idiots. Now do that with political posts and you have a 90% understanding of Facebook.

Facebook > Twitter.
But that ain't saying much.

The ease in which we can share information is absolutely a good thing
Changing how we communicate? I don't know. It's all kinda new for me to really answer that question, but I don't have problem with it. I enjoy not having to call people all the time.

We have always been tribal. We have always surrounded ourselves with like minded people.
Humans are tribal by nature.

Sure, but it's only amplifying that to an extreme in certain instances.

again
has always been the case
almost all wars are a bunch of like minded people wanting to kill those other like minded people

We didn't have all this nonsense with My Space.
People weren't using Myspace as a tool to cheat on their spouses with long lost exes or crushes?

You're contradicting yourself. You say the ease of communication and info sharing has advanced society. It clearly hasn't always been this amplified as facebook has only existed for 15ish years.

This type of stuff pops up on my newsfeed daily. You think this type of paranoia existed before Facebook? You think it spread across the nation like a wildfire and got shared to millions overnight?

Social media gives far more access to tribal people than ever. Theres no comparison.
Its allowed extremist views to spread rapidly and basically makes a caricature out of society. It allowed the social fabric to RIP apart at an extraordinary rate.

That post was concerning tribalism, not the ease of communication.
And tribalism has absolutely been this intense in the past, hence all the wars we have had in the past.

I vividly remember local news running stories about gang initiations in the 90s, like them flashing their lights at you, so yes

Urban myths still spread like wildfire long before FB. It just took longer.

A huge negative for society. Exponentially more tribalism, narcissism, anxiety, depression, and giving everyone ADD.
Not to mention a huge waste of time.

I agree. I saw a post the other day from a female about how she would never take an Uber because she posted some article from a no name site about an Uber driver. I guess that means all uber drivers are rapists and killers right? The comments I saw on this post were the most irrational things I've ever seen.
You'd think we live in a country where we are all constantly at risk of being raped, trafficked, and murdered by everyone else as soon as we step out of door.
Facebook tends to only amplify the negative in my experience.

That's sort of the point though is it not? We are talking about fake stories being spread to millions in a matter of hours not months or years.

“13 Uber drivers in Atlanta were just arrested for sex trafficking!! Y’all be careful out there ladies!!!”
250,000 responses
1.5 million shares
All without doing one ounce of research.

Is it? Does it make that much of a difference?

Ok. Paranoid people still believe the story and spread it to more paranoid people.
The result is still the same.

90% of the active people on my Facebook feed are boomers posting shitty memes. It's definitely regressed society.

Are you arguing that the ease of spreading false information is a good thing and doesn’t have a deterrent effect on society?
