hurricane winds are measured at 33 feet

here is an article that talks about what you are mentioning

Yeah, I shouldve been more clear. I get that. I am referring to the classification of hurricane strength when they are still over open water. Obviously they are measured from the hurricane tracker flights at 10K feet. I was just unsure if that was then revised to reflect ground level winds.

Barely even knew it passed over by the time it got to the North Shore.

Andrew was the worst I remember and I was 7 years old when it came through. It may have been a 3 when the eyewall got to us. It was really bad and I would not want to do that again. We are about 60 miles straight line from Morgan City and we got hammered. I don't want to experience a direct hit from a 4 or 5.

Laura was still a 2 when it passed through CENLA. I don’t want to be on the coast a storm

1965 Betsy

Not on coast, but eye past over Plaquemine and my father and I walked in the eye. Was between Cat 3 or 4. Freakiest thing I’ve been through ever.

Ida passed right over us in Amite county Ms. That was the longest night I’ve had but we made it through unscathed other than some trees down. I can’t imagine being in that on the coast as it came ashore.

Theyre only a couple thousand feet off the deck.

They are corrected and there is a means of measuring surface winds on the plane, though it can be of dubious accuracy at times.

Walking around Lakeview during the eye of Zeta was otherworldly. Eeriest half hour or so I’ve ever experienced. The color of the sky coupled with the wall of swirling clouds you could see coming was absolutely mesmerizing.
