Don’t panic. Don’t think that you can’t handle it. Your fatherly instincts will kick in and you’ll do fine.

The most vulnerable I ever felt was that first drive home from the hospital with my little girl.

I imagined that I was placing a nuclear warhead in the trunk of a Ford Pinto and that fire would cause it to detonate.

I second what others have already said:

1. Start a 529 fund.
2. Read to her every night. The best intro to the alphabet is Jane Moncure's "My First Steps to Reading" series. If you engage her looking at the pictures and saying the word, she will shortly be reading to you. Find a used set, new is expensive.

Hold a newborn with its ear over your heart. She's listening to Mrs Hawkeye's heartbeat right now so yours will be a familiar and comforting sound.

Answer each and every question she asks, whether it is an 8 year old who wants the facts about how babies are made, or an 11 year old who is conflicted about what to do when a friend talks about suicide. You often don't need to give detailed or graphic academic answers, just so they know that you are a source of accurate facts. Don't tell them babies come from swallowing watermelon seeds.

Any TD parenting advice?

my advice is for pre birth. make sure your wife or baby's momma listens to her body. if something isn't right, make sure she goes to the doctor. this happened to us, and her blood pressure was settling out in the 180s. at the 29 week mark. had our kid via c section the next day. momma and/or baby likely would have died had we not paid attention and sought help immediately.

Child 1: "OMG!!!! They cut their finger. Call 911. Let's get to the ER."

Child 2: "Hold still so I can get this closed and put a band aid on it."

Child 3: "Is there major blood loss or missing body parts? No? You'll be okay. I'm busy. Go get a band aid."

Congratulations.

Advice: Don’t let electronics raise her.

Set boundaries and stick to them.

Other than that, remember no one is a perfect parent and enjoy the ride!

Affix the bow of shame and cast her into the wolf pit.
