I know a small cadre of Cubans here in the USA.
All of these wonderful Americans that I know say the same thing after having fled their homeland:

Cubans don't like socialism.
Cubans don't like communism.
CUBANS DON'T LIKE DEMOCRATS.

That’s very true. Ive not personally met any Cuban people who are leftists, not one.

My family is Cuban.

Anybody who hasn't had their head in the sand the past 50 years knows the truth about Cuba. Progressives have convinced themselves otherwise though.

We have a progressive poster here who has a healthy disdain for American Cubans fyi, I expect his posts in this thread shortly.

“ Impressive “ ?

Which part, the state executions of dissidents, The mass imprisonment of the political opposition, the seizing of private property, the lack of fair elections, the arbitrary nature of the law, the enrichment of Communist Party members, Etc ?

For fricks sake man.

It is comparable because of what they have done with their island.

Why don't you come up with some better comparisons?

Warning: We will do the same.

What socialist nation is the size of the USA would you compare to? The Soviet Union was close, but failed. China?

How come you don’t bring up the excellence of Cuban doctors?

(Because Cuban “doctors” are not trained on a par with the that required in the US to be a PA, much less to be an actual physician)

You can say your cat is a dog all day long but it’s still a cat.

The same is true of any statistic (life expectancy, literacy rate, etc.) about Cuba.

The stats are cooked.

While Cuba sucks, the ordinary folks there do not.

Idk what this video is trying to get across but everything I’ve ever heard about Cuba is that it’s poor, run down, has a terrible government and that it’s citizens are willing to cross the ocean in makeshift rafts to leave. Never heard of anyone claiming Cuba is a paradise besides online commies

By online commies do you mean media and politicians? Cuba and Castro has been praised by the mainstream Left for quite a while. Common sense would dictate it's an asinine take, but the Left has never been high on common sense.

I mean seriously

You can go to Youtube and watch footage of what it is like on the ground in Cuba

Whatever statistics a single party communist state pumps out mean literally nothing.

It is objectively a shithole at immediate first glance.

It is that easy.

Truthfully it doesn’t surprise me at all that they’re literacy rate is in the high 99th percentile. It is so for very similar reasons as much of the prior Eastern European Bloc.

First, the schools aren’t babysitters for parents who cry about every perceived wrongdoing or slight to their child at the hand of a teacher.

Second and far more importantly, for the majority of these folks the only way out of the slums and neighborhoods they live in is to do well in their classes, graduate in the top tier and hope they get noticed for a college admission and/or opportunity for a meaningful career. The kids are encouraged by their parents to do well instead of here where ethnicity can be a deciding factor on whether or not you get further ahead.

Clearly even the smart ones won’t have the life they could have here, but with the hand they are dealt it is definitely in their best interest to get real good grades as opposed to the current system we have of what amounts to participation A’s.

I do however find it ironic that someone on a Louisiana based board would have the stones to criticize some other location’s education system.

And btw, yes I have been to Cuba. You should visit some time too and you’ll quickly realize the people are far from illiterate.

I will believe everything I’ve seen about Cuba is a lie when I see Floridians making rafts to sail to Cuba for the better living conditions.

I can see a totalitarian regime wanting the population to be literate as long as the government can control the flow of information.

But there's no excuse for not being able to read in the US. We provide universal primary and secondary education, we have PBS programs to reinforce the three Rs, and there are even websites like Starfall that you can access from a public library or Obama phone (Starfall is designed by a guy who was 9 when he learned to read and overcame the bad start to become a doctor.)
