I just untied my shoe and did my habitual way and it was correct the whole time. I'm such a stud.

Exactly... this clown starts his knot off backwards,,, then 'fixes' it by going around the bow/loop backwards.
The correct 'fix' is to make your first overhand knot correctly by making the right lace go over the left lace.
