I know a guy who did that on a sheep ranch in Idaho. He lasted about three days. If they actually expect you to do real labor, and you're not used to it, it will kick your arse.

I would probably do something like that if it really interested me.

Ok, sorry confused you with someone else.

In any way, a working vacation like you mention can be very therapeutic. Better than sitting on your arse all day trying to read your first novel of the year.

that's what I was thinking. It's more for the experience, change of scenery and knowledge. I'd also like to check out this farm's operation in person. Supposed to be a very nice operation they have going.

Anyone ever done this? Sounds interesting to me.
FIFY

frick that.

My forbearers worked their asses off (oppressing and exploiting folks of other races) to allow me to not have to shovel sheep shite.

Did that too. LOL. Traveled quite a bit and the "touristy vacation" thing bores the f'k out of me. Working vacay sounds kind of interesting. Working 20-30 hours a week is a cake walk.

Years ago stayed at a couple of places in NZ where you could stay for free in exchange for a couple hours labor.

Take the wife and kids whenever I go for continuing education. Stay in classes while they have a big time.

Taking my kids on a "roofing" vacation this summer.

I did this as a kid with my dad. I was a kid so I thought it was fun to be up on the roof like that. I had a great time with Dad up there, got paid and learned a useful skill.

Decades later, Hurricane Gustav hit and my BIL and husband took off work to do roof jobs for the elderly, family and needy friends. It was hot as hell, hard work but I still had a great time up there on the roof with the guys.

The homeowners were a bit surprised to see lil 5 ft tall me toting those shingles, scrambling up the ladder and doing manual labor when they knew my regular job was being a kindergarten teacher.

It wasn't your typical vacation but just knowing that we helped people who really needed a new roof was a good feeling.
